New guy here but I thought I'd show my gear, for what it's worth.

Image
Patrol BOB which includes H-harnes web gear w/butt pack, flash light, knee pads, one .45 model 1911 w/3 mags, one AR15 assult rifle with 17-30 round mags, 1 camelbak, collapsible stove with aluminum foil, bic lighter, 9 heat tabs, water purification pills, camo stick, field dressing, sweat rag/hand towl, first aid kit, silva compas, signal mirror, K-Bar, 2 sardines, camo head neating/scarf, 2 Cyalome sticks w/holder, folding knife, 50' para cord, cleaning patches, Q-tips, LSA lube, rifle cleaning kit, pancho, wool gloves.

Image

US Military Field Pack w/internal frame, standard BOB w/2 canteens and small machete (and camo rain cover and sleeping bag not shown). I figure as this thing rides in the truck I can make it heavy so if I actually have to hump it I can always reconsider my load as necessary as I'd rather have something and not need it than need something and not have it.

Image

Right to left. 3 double ration Marine Cuisine, salt/pepper, seasonings, 15 heat tabs, 5 instant coffee bags, 10 sugar bags, 10 creamers, 5 assorted oatmeal packages, chopsticks, mess kit, freeze dried chicken pasta, 4 assorted sardines, 6 assorted Top Ramen, 1 can Vienna Sausage, waterproof bag; w/.22 ammo, bic lighter, batteries, waterproof matches, sewing kit, heat tabs. Collapsible stove w/heat sticks, solar radio, solar battery charger, first aid kit w/prescription meds, field glasses, toilet paper, tooth paste, razor, tooth brush, shaving foam, 6'X8' camo plastic tarp, playing cards, hammock, 50' Para cord, light jacket, blue jeans, long sleeve shirt, 2 pair socks/underwear, mosquito head net, space blanket, leather gloves, faraday flash light, bath towel, swim suit, wash cloth/sweat rag, Israeli gas mask /w filters, Ruger Mark I w/2 mags. Of course, everything is enclosed in freezer grade zip lock bags.

This is the daypack i carry when out for the day. The idea is to provide emergency gear for an unexpected night out. It's based on a kelty redtail 1800 daypack. BOB to follow...

In the second pocket are a variety of useful items...

Image

Updated pics and notes, crossposted from by BOB thead: http://zombiehunters.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21755

These pics show my efforts at resolving a recurring problem I've been having, which is getting the various components of my gear to work well together. This includes Individual Body Armor, Load Bearing Equipment, and my Bug Out Bag. These work well separately but wearing them at the same time causes an exponential multiplication of discomfort and difficulty. Nevertheless, I've gotten it to more or less work, so I thought I'd share:

Image

From the front, you can see that it more or less fits. Note, however, the shoulder area: the BOB straps on top of the LBE straps on top of the body armor requires a lot of fitting and adjusting to get them just right. There's a crapload of layers of padding on my shoulders right there. (Note: I've been thinking about adding a Tactical Tailor MAV to all this, with an X Harness no less, but thinking about that layering effect, I may want to do without the padding of the X harness at the very least!)

Image

From the side, you can see one of the problems: I've got six 3x30 USGI mag pouches, plus two canteens, and a butt pack. I can do this since I'm large and am wearing the LBE over armor, so I've got a lot of waist room to put pouches on. (This is something not a lot of people think about: not only do fat people pack their own food reserves, but they can fit more stuff on their belts!) However, doing this puts those canteens way far back, under the pack, so that the BOB is actually sort of resting on the canteens.

Image

Solution (not shown): After taking and evaluating these pics, I swapped the canteens forward and the last pair of mag pouches back, so the canteens are out from my hipbones and the last pair of mag pouches are in the back, one on either side of the buttpack. This works well, and although those mag pouches aren't as accessible, this isn't a critical flaw since I've got room for 12 mags up front, anyway. I might not even use those last two for mags, I might use 'em for survival gear. I think TheLastRIfleman had a post about using a 3x30 mag pouch as a survival pouch, I might do that with these. Or buy more mags. There is some sort of obscene joy in having six times three times 30 rounds of ammo (540 rounds!) of 5.56mm ammo on my waist. Obviously I'd only lug that much weight if combat was extremely likely; otherwise it'd probably just be my Mossy and a dump pouch with a handful of buckshot shells in it.

Image

From the back, you can see that 1) the buttpack's uneven (off to one side) and 2) there's a whole maze of spaghetti hanging off my ass. No, those aren't roundworms, that's all the excess webbing from all the straps on the Zulu, the E&E, the buttpack, etc. I need some Web Dominators, asap!

Image

Closeup of the buttpack. The buttpack represents one of the major problems I'm having with this setup. It's uneven, here, just because it's empty and gets pushed aside when I don the BOB; I'm not that worried about that. But, the real problems were, mainly: 1) the meathooks dig into my flesh when pressed down by the weight of the BOB on them, and 2) the buttpack is pressed down into my butt by the bottom of the BOB, which might be uncomfortable after a long hike.

Issue 1 has been solved by cutting the meathooks off the suspenders with a pair of bolt cutters and replacing them with zipties. Seems to work well.

Issue 2 will be evaluated by another test hike, this time with both LBE and BOB (but not IBA!). I may have to do without a buttpack with this rig, especially if I put my sleeping bag in the POD on the bottom of the Zulu BOB. Further updates will be posted as I experiment more.

Image

From this side you can see my old spray paint camo job on my LBE. It's better, IMHO, than the shiny OD nylon, but it's a bit orderly, i.e. looks like a pattern (stripes) and therefore might draw the eye. I've redone my paint job to better match the MultiCam, look less contrasty and less like a pattern. I took pics as a how-to and will post them shortly.

Image

You can see here how the Liter Plus pouch sort of pushes the canteen out on this side. I had to move the Liter Plus as high on the PALS webbing as it would go to get it to fit at all. Since taking this pic, I moved the canteens forward and the last ammo pouch back, so now they don't conflict as bad. The canteen is just forward of the Liter Plus pouch now, doesn't get pressed down by the BOB, and it all fits together pretty well now.

Image

Closeup of the above problem. Will post pics of my solution when I'm able; I need Steph to take more pics of me. Possibly tomorrow AM.

Image

The other side. On this side you can see how the canteen is pressed down by the BOB. Again, this has now been solved by swapping the canteen with the last mag pouch.

Image

In the very last pic, you can see how I've plugged the grommet holes in the bottom of my E&E pack: rubber grommets pressed into the holes, then sealed and expanded by threading nylon nuts through the holes in the middle of the rubber grommets. Should seal out water, sand, etc.

Summary of Lessons Learned:

Since taking these pics, I moved the canteens forward, the last pair of mag pouches back, redid the camo job on the LBE, and cut the meat hooks off and replaced them with zipties.

I still plan on replacing the IBA woodland cover with a BCS-I in MultiCam, and adding a Tactical Tailor MAV on top of it. I was considering a 1 piece with X harness and bib, like Grifter's but MultiCam; however the bulk of all the straps on my shoulders has be reconsidering the X harness, especially when I'm wearing it over armor.

I don't know if the MAV would replace or supplement the LBE, but in the latter case, I would be carrying a truly obscene number of magazines. More an exercise in overkill than a practical solution to any real problem I expect: If I can't solve a problem with 540 rounds of 5.56mm, I REALLY shouldn't have gotten myself into it in the first place! But the idea of wearing an entire case of ammo does have a perverse appeal to me.

You have some expensive really good gear, but your using it wrong. For starters ditch the LBE, you have the vest- level 3a, If you "might" go through firing 1 shot in anger the vest is must have.
You have 500 an suntin?

So put 3 mags on the vest, get rid of the butt pack, you have to remove the gear to use the butt pack, right now if you remove your LBE you have no ammo on you. Keep the belt, but put 1 mag pouch on it, just in case you take the vest off you will still have ammo.

1 canteen on the belt will do just fine, you can't get to the rest without seriously focusing on "just that" anyways, not a problem but if someone might be taking aim at you, which I assume the reason for the cammo and kevlar- the your focus shouldn't be on a canteen you can barely reach.

Use the webbing on the vest, ditch the LBE stay with pistol belt, for say pistol? or BFK, and a drop leg.

You don't want anything in between you and the ruck, or the ruck and the ground, that ruck will hang up on the LBE if you go to drop it, and you will then have a ball and chain.

Here I am, wearing my new EMR pack.

Contents are essentially the same as from the Zulu BOB I have on Page 1 of this thread.

As you can see, I've put aside, for the moment, the idea of piggybacking the Zulu on top. Instead, I've moved all the pockets and pouches from the Zulu over to the EMR, optimizing the EMR as a stand-alone BOB, moving towards an INCH.

As you can see, there's an empty spot, low on each side, that's pretty much begging for a 2Qt./Utility pouch.

the whole shebang. Eagle industries A-III ~2500 in^3 bag. The white thing is my cheap-o plastic lean-to summer shelter, and the little black bag has a pair of cheap polarized safety/sun glasses in it. Everything weighs in at around 30 lbs with a full hydration system. I tried to keep this as light as possible to keep me moving fast (hopefully ~20 miles a day) and it would quickly lighten up as I consume food and water. I dispensed with a sleeping pad for my summer bag since my thermarest z-lite doesn't add much comfort and is mainly for insulation, which I definitely won't be needing in the summer. Haven't tried this new bag on a long walk yet, but will start carrying it (maybe with external stuff removed so it looks more "normal") on my daily 2-5 mile walk with the dog to see how I hold up. You can't see the 100oz camelbak reservoir, and I forgot to put my wide-brimmed hat that I keep outside the bag in the shot.

Image
clothes, which are kept in the gray REI ditty bag. (3) pairs of under armour boxer jocks, (2) sweat-wicking t-shirts, (2) pairs of cotton socks and (3) polypro sock liners. Pants are north face nylon zipper offs, can't remember the model.

Image
cooking and water purification stuff. Snowpeak gigapower stove with fuel canister, roll of TP (charmin ultra-soft I think 8) ), MRE spoon, 1 cup stainless cooking pot, MSR water filter setup and a baggie with waterproof matches, hand sanitizer, extra AAA batteries and cotton balls smeared with vaseline (AWESOME tinder btw).

Image
FAK with prescription painkillers and antibiotics for dog, and tylenol 3 for myself.

Image
a week's worth of food. I will be many things if I ever have to live out of this bag for a week, but hungry won't be one of them :D . This amount of food gives me a little more than 2000 calories a day. Also have drink flavoring (crystal light rehydration mix, folgers instant coffe, green tea bags) and 7 MRE heaters. The heaters help make MRE's a little more palatable and don't weight much.

Image
hygiene stuff, the little green thing is floss.

Image
miscellaneous stuff; the two white things are 15 gal trash bags.

Image
summer sleeping bag, an REI travel sack. It's pretty damn hot here even at night in the summer so this will probably just be used as ground covering for myself and the dog.

Image
Tools and sunglasses. Also a cell charger and money belt with 200 bucks and a credit card in it. The headlight is a petzl, which kicks ass. The little baggie has a leatherman, wire saw and a single package of remington remoil wipes.

Dog's bag:
Image
each baggie has a day's food in it. The bottom 4 baggies are extra food which I will grab and throw in the car if I can bug out that way.

protection: don't like to post pics of weapons, but needless to say I will be packing. I don't think a long gun is a good idea in a bug out situation unless #1 it's really light and #2 you can conceal it.

This is an update on my earlier post. This kit is derived from, and fills the same purpose as the earlier pack, but with enhanced capability. The idea is for a hiking daypack that would contain the essentials for one or two nights out if there was an unexpected emergency. This would be intended for 3-season use. The importance of this was demonstrated recently when a party of dayhikers was trapped by rising water at a local creek. Even after they were found (They were able to call for help on a cel phone) emergency services was unable to get to them. They dropped some gear to them from a helicopter, but were unable to land due to the nature of the gorge and the wind conditions. The group was forced to spend an unexpected night out. Some suffered mild hypothermia even though it is summer.

This would also work as a 72hr kit by stretching the food a day. (or adding a little more before going out the door)

Significant improvements include; larger capacity than earlier system, provision for shelter, enhanced water purification, and a better bivy sack.
The system is contained in a Kelty Redwing pack (i think 3100) there is room to spare.
Image
Image
This is a minimal FAK. The sawyer extractor is included because some of my hiking areas have timber-rattlers.
Image
Image
Image
Image
The small orange bag is the bivy, The large orange bag is a fleece sweatshirt, the black bag is a water filter. The little green bag behind the cook kit is a rainjacket. The large green bag is the tarp and stakes.

My everyday carry is simple wallet, gun, knife, and of course cell phone.

Image

My get home bag or goto bag, what ever you call it, this is with me pretty much any time I am away from home. This bag gets me to my BOB.
The bag is CC gen5

Image

I call this the front and here is what I have in the pockets you see. On each end I have 32oz water.

Image

Looking left to right, you have water, knife sharpener, Leatherman Blast, compass, steripen, pot holder, TI cup pot and lid, and then pens paper and disk backup with all my important info.

On the back

Image

You have batteries, flashlight, and if I have to use this bag, first thing I do is take my pocket kit out and put it into my pants pocket. This is Doug Ritters kit with a few mods if you will. I always wear carhart cargo shorts or long pants.

Inside the bag.

Image

Starting at the top left corner

Image
Kifaru bag to hold my shelter stuff. Green is tarp 10x10, red is blanket with silver on back, 100’ 550 cord, bivy, couple of silver wraps if you will and a couple of figure 9s.

Coming down the left side next is fire. Everything is in a Kafaru bag and then into a water proof bag. You have wind proof matches and box matches, Vaseline cotton starters, matches in waterproof container, 6 of those esbit cubes, a piece of leather, and my Swedish fire starter.

Image

Coming to the bottom left is spoon and fork, poncho in blue, stainless steel hobo stove. Cant see it very well, but up above the stove is my water stuff. I have tabs and some coffee filters. Next to the stove is a candle. I got this kind because if I have to spend time out in the night and it gets cold, I can do a couple of things easier with this size candle. For example with the poncho on and a log between my legs I could set the candle on the log light it and get warm quick if had to. Next to candle is medical.

Image

You can see the SAS book, it has allot of notes I have taken over time in it, above that is my gransfor burks mini, SOG revolver. Above that is Garmin GPS and a beanie hat for night to conserve heat. Next to the GPS is my flashlight case in case I want to put it on my belt.

Image

Coming down the white is TP with a whistle next to it. The blue are gloves with some Deet next to them. Then I finish off with some food bars, glasses, tape, and two bandannas.

Got a couple of things to do yet. I want to put some Calcium Hypochlorite for Disinfect Water in a container cause of better shelf life, add a lighter and there was something else but cant remember right off….

This is just an observation from a guy who has done a lot of backpacking. I noticed there seems to be almost no attention paid to weight in a few of these bobs. Some sporting a lot of redundancy( multiple knives or pistols). Canned food is very heavy. I would suggest a lot of dried food like oatmeal or rice. I would also suggest actually going out into the field with just your bob for a long weekend. Try covering some ground, say 8 miles a day in the mountains or 15 a day on flat ground. I bet after 3 or four days of that, you will be rethinking your setup. My expierence has been to keep pack weight under 35 pounds. The closer you are to 25 pounds the better. Water is huge. A way to carry and purify it. A way to make fire. An aluminum or titanium pot. A tent is a necesity. It keeps you warm in the winter and bug free in the summer. Obviously a sleeping bag. I like down bags because they pack to the size of a football, weigh nothing but are really warm. I have found synthetic(nylon,spandex,polyester,flece,ect...) clothing to be one of the greatest advances in outdoors activity. It flash dries, and doesn,t hold odor as much. A flashlight is important. I like the peltz headlamps. They weigh next to nothing, and the batteries last days. I swear by my leatherman wave multi tool. Last hiking trip with my son, it did everything from sawing firewood to carving a spoon. As for firearms, I own quite a few. I have an AR-15, AK-47, Glock,HK usp .45, ect. Honestly, I would probably carry the AR 15 and the HK. I wold have my wife carry the shotgun. It's an auto loading bird gun. If i could only bring 1 gun, it would be the shotgun. It is by far the most versitile weapon I own. It can take largeand small game, and birds on the wing. It is a proven self defense weapon against man and animal attacks. It can shoot flares. the ammo is readily available and easily reloadable. Also is very light. I know I'm forgetting things like first aid and shoes, but its getting late.
