Mainer's BOB - WIP - Minor Update

Postby Greg Mainer » Tue May 20, 2008 8:30 pm

Okay so I decided to post my BOB as I work on it. So to start the ball rolling here's the bergan itself.

If memory serves my bag is a 65 litre one (I bought it something two or three years ago), anyway more to come when I find it and start packing it in there. Feel free to comment on the bag and offer ideas for possible kit (though note that I'm essentially on student funds and British).

Looks like a very nice bag! I look forward to seeing what kind of kit you already have for it.

It served me well on a few hikes hence I'm using it for my BOB. Unfortunately I can't find the name of it or even the company online so I can't post the exact details of it.

It appears to be a good starter bag and I'm sure that the pics don't do it any justice. Good luck!

If we go by only camping gear I've gotten a tent, a sleeping bag and two weeks of clothing in it before (jumpers, and the rest). With a room for snacks, books and a radio afterwards.
I'll be measuring that bin as well that's next to it and using it as reference for all my photos.

Well, that leaves out my suggestion of a solid gold AK-47.

(Ha, I make the funny.)

Cool bag. I'm glad to hear you tried it out on some hikes.

I have always found it helpful for myself to consider the intent of the bag when I'm creating a BOB.
For example: a BOB for 3 days journey over ABC-terrain during XYZ-season.

It helps me to pack what is relevant to my situation. Othewise, I tend to become overwhelmed
trying figure out what to use. I don't need to pack a parka in my BOB during the 110(f)/43(c)
summers of central Texas.

Over time, I accumulated the items I will always need in there; but I'm not afraid to regularly
switch out seasonal gear in my BOB.

Well I'm planning to carry a fair amount, I've been training my back for years in school. I used to carry everything I needed everyday, sometimes I used to jog home with it as well. Anyway I'll be sure to remember the seasonal gear part and see if I can't use the bottom pouch for it to make it an easy switch.

Switching out seasonal gear is very good. You make sure you have what you need, and not the extra weight/bulk of what you don't. Also, it forces you to look inside your bag at least twice a year, which is a good thing. Sometimes you get your bag 'tuned' to perfection, then don't do anything with it for 2 months, and then you've forgotten whats in it =P

I was planning on affixing a checklist to one of the zips and slipping it into the top pocket when in use.

I thought so, plus if I can mount a local map to the rear of it.
