5.11 MOAB 10 vs Kif E&E for EDC/Laptop

Post by Shadoq » Mon Mar 18, 2013 10:54 pm

Hey guys,
Looking at getting a small pack for EDC/Laptop carry/secondary item carry on for aircraft.
The pack also has to be able to be docked and locked to another pack or attached via 5.11 tier system.
I've pretty much narrowed my choices down to the 5.11 MOAB 10 or the Kifaru E&E with Xray straps.
Anyone have any good reasoning to get one over the other?

Thanks!

As someone who carries a lap top everyday I wouldn't recommend either bag for laptop carry. As a secondary pack that your looking to dock to a bigger back I would recommend the Kifaru E&E with the stock straps. The E&E is a pocket that turns into a pack where as the MOAB is a pack that can be docked (i.e a pack that turns into a pocket). The E&E just make more sense to me for your stated purpose. If you want to put the Xray straps on there that's your business but I don't see a need for beefier straps as it's not meant to carry that much weight and they won't be as easy to tuck away. Even with my E&E loaded out the stock straps are fine (to me) and the chest strap helps out that much more.

I have the 5.11 MOAB 10 for my tablet/EDC. It works great, feels great and is very well made. It has rained and snowed when I've had it on and never had my tablet got wet. Also I've gotten countless compliments on it and I haven't had it a year. I know 5.11 tactical is having a 20% all bags and backpacks. Let us know what you choose.

74:
What is the most weight you've carried with it and not had a comfort issue?
Granted, I've never worn it and the system has a great reputation, the stock straps just look flimsy as heck to me...

To be honest I'm not sure how much weight I've had in it. Maybe between 10-15lbs, maybe a little more? I'm horrible at guessing weight and I never weigh my packs. When I take it on day hikes I usually carry a 2 liter platty, canteen cup, esbit + tabs, gloves, food, AMK, poncho tarp, ground tarp, shamug, fire kit, bungee cords, multitool, light/head light, extra batteries, and a ditty bag with some other random what not. I kind of threw that list together off the top of my head so I might have left some stuff out. Haven't had any comfort issues thus far. I wouldn't call the straps flimsy there just not thick beefy straps. They're the same as the straps on the waist belt of my ZXR so they can definitely handle themselves. And who knows, maybe the Xray straps tuck away just fine, I've just only ever used the stock ones. I've found that the key to making the pack work with the thin stock straps is to keep the pack sinched up high. When you add the chest strap to the equation you're good to go.

How big is your laptop? I have a MOAB6 and it carries a 10.1 tablet and netbook with no issues.

Laptop is approx 9.25" X 13.50". It is a little chunkier but after my netbook and the fails that thing had while deployed(IDF doesn't usually help though) I decided on something bigger.

74: Interesting...I wish more guys around here had Kifaru so I could actually feel it as it seems like the E&E is a fairly common thing being on the cheaper side...

I have a "E & E" style bag custom built from a gear maker in Australia.

I have a Maob 6 and had a Rush 12.

The E&E as 74 says is nothing more than a big pocket with 2 straps, made for escape and evasion. Lot of people buy these thinking they are true packs and find out fast they are not. Theres picture on Kifaru form, where somebody docked an express I think it was to an E&E. Yeah you read it right, I hope it was a joke too.
Also there is no frame or suspension or padded to protect electronics. I bought mine to haul my mac book. It is OK. I cut foam padding to place in the bag.

The 5.11 line will just work better for laptop carry. I used the M6 to carry my ipad, and it works good. The R12 will haul all this, and a little more.

What about timbuk2? They had pretty non descript laptop bags made for hippies! Seriously, I've had a few T2 bags and they are really well made bags.

Sierra trading has some close out T2 bags for sale at real nice prices.
