Recce Smock Alternative?

Postby moab » Tue Aug 21, 2012 5:08 pm

Would love to find something like this in 3xl/multicam. Anyone know of an alternative? Maybe cheaper. I like that it's longer than these newfangled waistcoats that everyone sells. I'm 6'3" and need the extra length. Even the new M65's are shorter than this. And don't really fit my frame well. Unless I could find a 3xl long.

That's what I have now. It's to short. Only 2xl comes in tall size and I'm 3xl in the shoulders.

I have a SASS Smock in DPM custom made in the UK and I will tell you, it's worth it to pay the money once and get the smock. It's got a poachers pocket, and padded elbows. Part of the concept of camouflage is to disguise shape and like you say, it can't be short and tight, it has to be baggy. The smocks do the job. I have a few shirts from DZ that I bought years ago, still going strong.

Strange but true. I recently came into possession of a Drop Zone Recce Smock in Multcam (don't ask please). Just because I am an old crank I mixed up a dye to approximate OD green and dyed the damn thing,, now I guess you could call it Blackdogcam as there is still somewhat of a pattern showing. After I dyed it I treated it with Nikwax Cotton Proof.

It is now hanging up in our cage as we speak. Other than the fact that it has at least a zillion pockets and appears to be very well made I don't have a whole lot to say about the smock and won't be wearing it for a while as it is hovering around the temp needed to cook a chicken lately. If things work out you will probably see it out and about sometime in the future.

I do like the smock concept and wear a older one in real cold weather as a outer shell. Pretty sure this one will replace the old one as the pockets appear to be much more useful on the Drop Zone and the old one has some personal value and can now take a well earned break.

I have some Dropzone stuff (Recon smock, plus some pouches). Pricey, but very well thought out, and definitely well made. I also have some Condor stuff, and I really love my Condor Summit softshell paired with the Condor Alpha fleece pullover inside - it's my daily wear in spring/fall :awesome: . The Summit/fleece combo is great for all but the most extreme cold, and I have worn it outside for 40 minutes at -40C. I was cold and had to keep moving, but to be honest, I was fine at about -20C with occasional movement.
