This isn't a super-fancy idea, and I'm sure I'm not the first person to figure this out, but I didn't find a post about it and thought somebody might find it usefull. I know a lot of people roll a few yards of duct tape around a business card for their BOB. But what if you want a lot more for a car kit or a INCH? I personally like to keep a full roll of duct tape in the truck, but a standard roll just takes up too much space. To solve this problem, I flattened the roll by cutting out the cardboard tube in the center.

The old flat tape trick. I learned this at my early years of Home Depot. It was the only way the clear tape would fit in the apron but the best thing about this is that it works with all tapes. It becomes a pain to unpeel towards the end of the roll but it is worth the space that it does not use. I was able to fit 5 rolls of electrical tape in my FAK where if I left in roll form I was able to fit only 2.

Great idea and people will love it, thanks for posting.

I did this with clear tape working at lowes, we used to compress it with the forks of a lift truck in lumber. We'd compress a case of tape rolls on a slow night and then stick them back in the supply closet. Never did occur to me to do this to duck tape.

I've done this for awhile, it really makes a lot of sense. Though I don't bother taking the cardboard out, I did it the first few times and I found that the roll "pops" back into a circle easier for when I'm pulling off long strips. I've never had a problem just smashing it down, I'm a pretty hefty guy and live by the adage "If brute force isn't working, it just means your not using enough of it.

I also use the buisness card technique to get small travel size duct tape rolls, but I found unless you use quality product such as gorilla tape, you will see a reduction in stickiness. Not to mention not every project needs the heaviest duty tape possible, I keep the cheaper stuff around the house too. I used to smash gaff tape and carry it around with me when I doing techie stuff, though I could never bear to do it to a full roll, thats stuff way too expensive.
