Take Shelter

Postby Maverick299 » Thu May 03, 2012 9:24 am

I rented this movie from Redbox last night without very high hopes. The movie was pleasantly suprising. It is a story about a man that has a deaf child and a schizophrenic mother that keeps having visions about the coming apocolypse. The dreams are real enough that they lead him to distance himself from his wife, his daughter, his friends, and his job and concentrate on building a underground shelter in his backyard for the coming "storm". If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend renting it. It's not a fast paced thriller, but more of a drama that incorporates zombies, prepping, and the apocolypse into the main focus of the movie. If you've already seen it, feel free to add your own reviews!

The greatest trick Skynet ever pulled was convincing the world they don't exist.

I agree it's a very good film that looks at the psychological and sociological aspects of prepping; and a community's less than understanding reaction to one man's actions.

I don't remember the movie having anything to do with zombies however.

In a few of his dream he see's his wife turn into something else, and he has "people" attack him and his daughter in the car. In another scene he describes how his co-workers eyes had turned into something else and than came after him with a pick-axe. Not really zombies in the Night of the Living Dead sense but I thought zombies were implied by the chemical rain changing them into something violent.

Thanks for the link to the other thread, I did a search for one before I started a thread, but my search-fu must be weak today.

No worries; it's the search function here at ZS that's lacking, not you. I've just spent so much time hanging out here I immediately thought: "Someone else already posted about that movie!" Then I realized even I had already posted about it.

In it's own quiet way, it's probably the best portrayal of disaster prepping I've ever seen in a movie. Not an untirely positive portrayal, but a very fair and realistic one.

And I really enjoyed that actor's restrained, understated performance. It helped make that church supper scene both excruciating and compelling to watch.
