There ARE a few things on that show that are good ideas, however they are vastly outweighed by the nuttiness. The "Pandemic Lady" and the guy who moved his family from Florida to the mountains of Tennessee due to the upcoming polar shift were pretty far out there. And the one lady who has a 12-mile hike through downtown Houston (I think it was Houston) to get to her stashed BOV. Why wouldn't a bicycle work after the SHTF?
A; I know a lot of folks on the forums (myself included) have listed the bicycle as the preeminent survival/bugout/zombie vehicle... It's quiet, doesn't take gas, keeps you in shape, and in the case of a recumbent bike or trike, can carry a hell of a lot of gear with you...

B; For the guy moving from the coastal city to that nice looking stretch of land in Tennessee.... Hell, I'd do that if I could afford it... i live in a coastal city, and I'd do it, whether or not polar shifts and aliens and whatnot was coming... Clean air, land to stretch out on... Country living, place to grow your own furniture and build your own livestock
For me, heaven on earth is no homeowner's association, no nosy neighbors who's barking dog gets loose and tries to snag your leg as you head off to work, no random people walking their dog and not picking up after they decorate your yard, or giving you the stink eye because you are working on your car instead of keeping up with the joneses and whatnot...
Being able to walk out of my front door, drunk, naked, and howling at the moon to lay down on the dewy grass (and lets face it, cool grass is sooo much nicer after you've had one too many than the bathroom floor could ever hope to be) and your neighbors..... are miles away, and couldn't care less.

That's reason enough for me...
Now that I can agree with, that's pretty much how we have it. My fiance dropped a deer in the back yard the other weekend and we shoot out in the yard all the time. I've also been known to leave the Jeep on jackstands for extended periods with various pieces missing, parts laying under it/on it, etc... To hell with a homeowner's association, I hear so much bad stuff about them from people who have them. You can do pretty much whatever you want around here, just don't go rolling up in people's yards starting smack.

Maybe abit of topic hear, don't know if anybody mentioned it but, I noticed the guy who is preparing for the earthquake is storing his food in glass jars. Wouldn't they just fall and smash?

And now in the vein of "Doomsday Preppers," the Discovery Channel has just posted a preview of a new show that they're introducing called "Doomsday Bunkers" which premieres on Mar 7th at 10pm. It looks very similar from the preview, but maybe this one will be more of a focus on the physical security aspects (at least that's what I'd expect, given the name of the show).

Here's the preview on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8qp-yO5LxE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It is wed tomorrow 4-5 pm Eastern so check the link for the local news preview slide show of their coverage http://www.wyff4.com/slideshow/news/305 ... etail.html

It doesn't look like they offer video of their news so hopefully someone will upload a copy of it to youtube so us nonlocals can see how they covered it.

Wow that looks cool. Though I don't think I can afford a bunker myself. I wonder if they will feature some of the bigger commercial bunkers like Vivos? http://www.terravivos.com/ I would love to see some better footage of those. Also have to wonder if they will talk about the government bunker system?

You put a small 1x1 from side to side across the shelves a few inches up to keep the jars on the shelves, and put rubber bands or strips of stockings around each jar.
My grandmother did that back in the 1920s and it still works.

Figured it was worth its own thread. :D

Hey did you guys hear that a stick thrown sideways carries the same power as a shotgun? According to the guy from Maine anyway. Looks like he has some serious survival skills though.

I just find that guy annoying. Apparently at least one of his kids did too, and the boy seemed less than impressed that he got his own preserved umbilical cord as some sort of magic talisman.

And honestly, if that last girl, attractive as though she is, said "government takeover" one more time I think I might have thrown up.

Missile silo guy was pretty cool though.

Is it just me or does every week get a bit nuttier then last week? Its really kinda upsetting that they only find the nut-jobs and show them as the representation of what preppers really are...ok rant over

To address some earlier speculation, SAG day rate is $825 for an eight hour day. Extras don't work on a sag contract, neither do reality show "stars."

Back on topic, how long before the BATF pays mister Molotov a visit? And do not assume that the producers would not have permitted a handful of felonies to be committed on camera. I work in the business, and reality shows are generally farmed out to fly-by-night production companies. Nat Geo will not be the producer of record, just a client that had ordered some shows. And the actual production company is likely operating out of a postage stamp office in Culver City, without the benefit of a legal team, or any understanding of NFA law...

This show is a colossal face palm for all involved.

I thought the show already seemed pretty high on the crazy scale, editing or not in some cases, but "government takeover" woman has proved that it does indeed go to 11. One question though, did anyone else wonder where all her cats were? Seemed like she would have a lot of cats. But I will give her credit where credit is due, for normal emergencies on a personal, local or maybe even regional level she seems very well stocked up and kudos to her for getting others invloved or at least aware of preparedness. :D

Serious skills he does in fact have. I contacted him this morning regarding the show. I told him I felt nat geo pushed the "conflict" and I wasn't buying it. When the son did well you saw how happy he was. That was a son wanting to please his dad. As suspected the conflict was complete and total bs. His son wanted to toss the tomahawks with his big brother but played the part for the cameras like the producer wanted.
He also added. well here, I'll paste his response.

"The completely different realities of our community and the Producer from New York city made it impossible to the point of comedy to convey the concepts and skills we wanted. They even made something as relaxing and awareness increasing as bird language seem like it was a fear based early detection system. None of the foraging, invisibility, or community piece was even put in, even though it was well over half of what we tried to show. Your observations about Ryan are correct. He loves the skills, and wanted to throw tomahawk with his big brother, but played the role for the cameras. He's eager to go to school and share today. As for anything to add, it was a good compromise be tween my agenda of wanting to share skills and their agenda. It could have gone worse."

Nuff said.

"Dances with Tom Brown" dad had all of the typical bullshit that I've come to expect from people who get sucked into the primitive skills as TEOTWAWKI prepping cult.
I love practicing primitive and indigenous skills, but the people like this, and all of those who joined into the "Tracker School" mind set after they jumped the shark and morphed into a bunch of psychic, spiritualist, fruit bats, are bad enough when they drop out of society to live out their personal fantasy roleplaying lifestyle, but to drag your kids into it is criminal.

Dude I know the guy and he is NOTHING like he was shown. If he is guilty of anything it is for being sucked into doing what the producers wanted. That family is very tight knit. TV is TV.

It looks like most everyone who has signed onto this show has gone on with a commercial agenda, and then presented themselves in a character that they hope will benefit them. When they didn't like the feedback, they jump up and down blaming those "evil big city folk who done came and misrepresented them". Sorry, not buying it.
Custom tailoring a retroactive explanation doesn't work in comic books and it doesn't work in the really real world.

One thing we need to recognize, is that any good editor can make even the sanest man look like a tin foil hat wearing pscyhopath simply by amassing enough footage and then editing things out of context and usually with some kind of lean.

The fact that the show doesn't actively try and discount what they do, is refreshing, but the lack of identity for the so called "panel of experts" and the statistics, and the way the show is formatted for sensationalism is suspect.
Anyone can be made to look the fool with enough camera footage... NatGeo/or the show's producers are simply trying to play both sides of the fence, make the show appealing to the lowest common denominator of preparedness interest, and make the people look bonkers enough to satisfy the head in the sand crowd...
Producer comes in, agrees with everything the preppers think talk about educating the public, puts the prepper off his guard, hey, this guy actually believes this is a good idea, he's just like me...
Lotsa fun on set, humor... All while the camera is rolling...
It kinda makes me sick.

Even Mr blew his own thumb off, is probably no where near like he was portrayed... (and I bet the producer's got wood when they got that footage... )

The only thing that obviously screams "stupid" about those on the show, is that they volunteered to be on the show in the first place... Goodbye Opsec, Goodbye reputation, and goodbye any respect from the public at large...

Anyone did a serious show on prepping would never get it to air...

So you're watching the producer's opinion (because that's what the final cut really is), yet you're using that and passing judgement on the people in the video, even though you're only seeing the footage you were allowed to see, and then discounting any followup explanations by anyone who was originally taped? Worse yet, when someone who knows one of the filmed parties speaks up, you're also discounting that information, instead relying entirely on whatever angle the producers decided to air. Am I getting this right?

Basically, you're agreeing with the statement - anything on TV must be true, because it was filmed, so it has to be true. That sounds moronic.

I could film your life, taping only the stupid things you do on a daily basis, it would make you look like a moron, but that doesn't truly mean you are one. Sometimes, there's more to the story.
