I am going to guess and say they wanted young females who were untainted for future breeding purposes.

They had shaved all of the hair off from the captured ones, and later on one of the guys in the basement kept saying the hair had the radiation, thats why they shaved their heads as well.

It was a good movie, that was my only complaint was there was no timeline for the events. It seemed like just a few days when the "others" came and had a full blown protective shield and lab around the basement before they even know who/what was all in the basement.

I think that was the point, because in a situation like that you don't have any real time reference. you just kinda sleep at whatever time a working clock says you should, and you would probably lose track of time being stuck in there. I dont recall ever seeing a clock or central timepeice they used, but having the movie jump around like that makes it easy to portray the way time would either fly by or slowly creep by.

Just my $.02 on the matter
