If you read the wiki article about the 2004 movie, the director liked the character, not the comic book or any of the mythos behind the character. Jane read up on the character and became a fan. There was also a budget issue.

Now that Marvel is using a unified approach in translating their characters to the big screen I would like to see them go back to Jane and do stories in MAX style, with a more deserving budget.
