chapter 30 CB channel?

Post by jhyatt7 » Tue Feb 28, 2012 8:37 pm

Hey Chapter 30, has anyone considered a CB channel we could all communicate on, during a SHTF scenario?

What an awesome idea! Recently my wife just up and bought a CB at a garage sale. It was like 5 dollars. I don't even know if it works or anything yet. I would like to get some HAM goodness going at some point. Maybe this year.

Any Amateur Radio Operators in the chapter? (I don't own a CB, sadly, the money I spent on the FT-897d pretty much kiboshed any more radio money I may have been able to spend).

Hey guys I just listened to a survival podcast today about CB's and it peaked my interest for SHTF scenarios. Any info you guys have on a good deal or great starter would be much appreciated.

I just listened to the same podcast: http://www.thesurvivalpodcast.com/cb-pr ... clay-vitis" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It also has me fired up to play with the CB's my wife got. I was interested in the "cb tag" game that he described. It would be a fun exercise for Chapter XXX!

My issue is I am mostly looking for a communication setup for one very specific purpose. If the cell phones go down and I am at my work in Round Rock, how can I reach my wife at work in Taylor? That is a distance of 17 miles. I don't know if CB's can cover that kind of range.

I'm also really interested in the range of CB's. I really want to get one but I was hoping they had a lot more range than the 50 dollar walkie talkies I see everywhere. Any info or a good link would be appreciated.

Hi All, would we use ten code or other in a 10-33? :)..Also make sure your antenna is tuned, it makes a huge range difference. http://www.rightchannelradios.com/tunin ... usting-swr" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I see what you did there.

That all depends on whose 10 code would be used really, I've never seen a universal 10 code sheet.

Although we might want to use this as a class for Zombie School sometime this summer. Just a thought.

Thanks for the link. Just wondering who, if anybody, has an amature license in chapter 30 and also who is interested? I have the tech class study guide and have been periodically reading it. I am hoping to take the exam sometime this summer. I know I will need to hook up with a club at some point to become proficient at using and programming the radios once i pass the test.

I was going to pick up a radio to go in my new vehicle; how do these stack up against other stuff people are buying?

I was thinking about getting this and an antennae:

I am not sure that anyone does have their ham yet. I've considered picking mine up though just so *someone* has it in the chapter.

Hi All, @Goofy and Helix Im shooting for March on the tech ham lic. It would be awesome if a few of us got them so we could plug in to the zs ham club! @Kent that midland looks to be a good one. The next CB I buy is going to have backlighting w/ a dimmer and weather bands 2 features I really miss. Also if any one needs to barrow an swr/watt meter for the ant tune hit me up. :)

I'll get the cb when I get the rest of my "electronic warfare" package set up in my car (remote start, alarm, radar detector, stereo).

Where should I go for antennaes?

This site has a lot of cb specific info. It may give some pointers on antena selection.

Hi All, This is a little off CB but still in commo :D I just got my ham license and have a copy of the ARRL (Tech) study guide. If anyone in ZS would like to borrow it to study up, just send me a message. Have a good one!

Along with NETNOMAD88, anyone monitoring HAM radio? 2m or 70cm? Also what about GMRS/FRS? Those are the cheap 14-21 channel walkie talkies from Walmart.

A couple of standard channels are a WONDERFUL idea! But why just stop at CB? :D Can we pick a standard 2m freq because of the longer range and one of the shared GMSR/FRS freqs? A lot of the Ham radios can also monitor and reach out to the GMRS/FRS channels (I can). The walkie talkies do not have a lot of range between themselves, but a more powerful Ham radio can tune to the Freq and defiantly push out and reach the walkie talkies during a SHTF emergency event. Channels 1-7 are shared between the GMSR and the FRS radios, so one of those would be better.

I own all three systems: CM, Ham, and GMRS/FRS.

Hi All, A wide multi band commo plan sounds like a good idea. What FRS/GMRS channels would we use? 3 privacy setting 0? As far as other freqs Im usually listening to the local repeaters and scanning 70cm, 2m.

Ch 3 for GMRS/FRS is cool.
I test for my Ham license May 5th! Should be easy, I've been studying. 2m gets better range than 70cm. I wonder how empty 144.330 is in Austin?
