CHL - what % of our chapter has it?

Postby zombieapocalypsegame » Mon Jun 11, 2012 9:18 pm

Hey all

Thought I'd post a poll about how many of us possess a concealed handgun license here in Chapter XXX.

I am signing up for my class today.

Need the "Taken the class and now working on fingerprints and paperwork" option...
The real question is, do you go into work just for the fun of seeing who's already zombified...

I answered "yes", but I rarely carry due to inconvenience and other limiting reasons.

I answered yes... Only time I'm not carrying is when I am at school. I just remove the gun from it's holster and leave it in the car.

I made the poll so anyone who participates can update their vote as their situation changes - i.e. you go from intending on it to having it.

That's where I am. I signed up for a class this month.

I voted "yes" and have had the "yes" option for a little over 7 years now. I've learned to love using my pocket for carry. Being a big guy and trying to carry concealed can get uncomfortable and at times painful with the gut and love handles. So any other big guys debating about carrying for this reason I suggest looking at pocket holsters. For me it is much easier, more comfortable, and many times quicker from draw.

That sounds about right, ?

CHL - what % of our chapter has it?

Postby Jeb_66 » Sun Jun 17, 2012 7:10 pm

Tapatalk doesn't show the poll, so I can't vote until later. But count me as a YES.

I'm a big guy, 300 pounds and 6 foot 3, and carry a full size Px4 .40 at 4 o'clock everyday, all day. The right belt and holster can make all the difference. I used a cheap belt and cheap holster right off the bat, and it wasn't comfortable at all. My buds on the other forum I'm on all the time told me to try a real belt and holster before I went the pocket route. (I have huge hands and dislike smaller guns). Got a good quality iwb and a good thick belt and have never had a problem since. Never leave the house without it. Lol

I am not a small dude at 6'4" and ~230+ lbs. I also intend on carrying my PX4 Storm 9mm full size. If my wife doesn't start carrying her Kahr CW9, and if my Storm is too big, at least I have one smaller alternate.

Looking forward to the CHL class this weekend. Not looking forward to being attentive in class at 7am. :gonk:

Yeah, it makes for a long day. But the REALLY long wait is once the online status is changed to MAILED it seems like it takes FOREVER to reach the mailbox with your CHL. Then time for the wally walk. Lol

I love my Beretta. It is a fantastic gun to learn on - super easy to disassemble & clean, and very pleasant to shoot.

The guys down at McBride's really listened to what I wanted, and I am very happy with their recommendation. Only downside is that the PX4 Storm doesn't use the 92 magazines, which would have been really nice.

Yeah, my 92 is my favorite gun. I rarely carry it because I don't want it beat up. I'm a mechanic and my Px4 gets carried 24/7. So at work it gets banged around while climbing under cars and what not.

So all my paperwork was in as of July 3rd - sent registered mail the day before. My fingerprints were taken on July 2nd, but a few days later, I get an email that they were rejected for some reason.

Back down to the fingerprinting place, and got that taken care of. I call in a couple days later to ensure they have the fingerprints - and those are approved. Now I'm just waiting for the State of Texas to open & process its mail. Apparently getting the paperwork is literally the longest part of the process.

Can't wait to have this done.

My turn around from the time I mailed it to it being in my hand was 5 weeks. The worst is after the web says it's MAILED and then your watching your mailbox like a hawk. Lol. That's when I swear time slows down and days take twice as long!!!

Once you get it in it's off for the wally walk.

It has gotten better, back in the late 90's early 20's it was not uncommon to go 6-8 months mailbox to mailbox.

I ran into a second snag with my application.

In mid July, I learned my CHL instructor had neglected to enter a date along with their signature on the form for my certificate of class completion. So, I got the application back from TX DPS in the mail, got the date issue fixed, and returned it immediately. TX DPS received it on July 20th according to the USPS.

Just today (nearly a full month later) my status on the CHL website was updated to reflect this receipt. Understand I had sent the amended application to a more specific (less bulk-mailed?) postal address for DPS Concealed stuff, per the instructions. So, to say they are slow is an understatement, but at least these days I can see the status on the website! Better news is that everything is now "in" and the 60-day period officially started from July 20th.

I believe this is when they review the app, and check background.

I am now very much looking forward to changing my vote to Yes.

Once again reminded that carrying all the papers around in my briefcase is NOT the same as gathering them together and mailing them in...

Hey J - welcome to ZS!

I believe all CHL classes (if it's your initial license) are only good for one year beyond your class date. If you're past that window of oppty, you're toast and it's a complete re-do. That would include taking the class and paying your fees, getting fingerprinted, etc. The works. That is IF you had not submitted any part of your application to TX DPS. If you did, the clock started ticking at that point, and if I recall correctly, their time-frame to reject/invalidate an incomplete application is far shorter than the one year period.

If it has been less than a year, you MIGHT be able to get replacement paperwork from your instructor. Not sure about the other pieces, but I believe fingerprints expire quickly, too.

I was wondering why the instructor let you take the class at 19. (Since it would be at least a year before you could send it in). Just seems like he should have recommended saving your money so you wouldn't have to do it twice.

There are exemptions for military, for example, and for law enforcement.

I didn't think to ask about those.
