Looking Forward, Looking Back.

Honestly, I think I ran out of ideas for it.

Originally, the story was going to be a lot shorter, something along the lines of how "October Rising" was.

Did anyone catch my little tip of the hat to that story in this one ?

I liked it I think you did well with it. Ending was good I'd like it and it stopped the plot getting to drawn out and tangled.

My next story is currently in the planning stages and it'll probably be a few months before I post anything from it.

Well I don't understand why Frankie kept Dallas and then shot her and said it was because they took stuff from his shop when he had already told them they could help themselves to what ever they needed.

Ok, I know it's been awhile since anyone has checked this story out, but a recent conversation in Chat Thread had me remembering the original ending to "Looking Forward, Looking Back."

In the original draft of the story, when Frankie shoots Dallas in the store, her wounds would later turn out to be fatal. This would send Chimpov over the edge and he'd lose his remaining sanity. He'd kill Frankie like in the version I posted long ago and eventually he'd return to the farm and just shut down. Eventually, it would become too much for him and he'd just snap.

At this point, Flynn would take over the narration duties and this is what the final part of the story would be.

Here's the original ending epilogue to "Looking Forward, Looking Back."

"Flynn: After Dallas', well Alison's death, Chimpov just retreated from this world. He never spoke again and just sat in the old chair Dallas used to and stare out the window. He lost weight to the point where he just didn't look like the bear of a man that rescued Mike, Kat and I from the airport bus. He was wasting away. For awhile, he was on the brink of death, but suddenly that all changed one day. He still didn't speak, but he did begin eating again which was good. He gained back his appearance and started looking like his old self again. We all thought he was making a comeback, until the night he died. He had gone to Alison's grave and spent a few hours there, just sitting there, looking off into the night. As I walked over to him, he just got up and walked off into the night. I called out to him and asked him where he was going, but got no answer. I ran back to the house to grab my SKS and a flashlight when I heard a single shot ring out in the night. I fell to my knees and began crying as I knew Chimpov had joined Dallas in death. The man I knew as Viktor 'Chimpov' Romanov had taken his life somewhere out in the darkness. We never found his body, but we still made a grave for him next to his beloved Dallas. He had loved her in this life and now he would spend the rest of eternity next to her. Rest in peace, mate. You've earned it."

Seeing as how no one has said anything about the original ending to this story, I've decided to go back through this story and edit some stuff. I'll be adding some new dialogue and editing out some parts that I feel just didn't add to the story. Stay tuned for that.

Hopefully, this version of "Looking Forward, Looking Back" will be just as entertaining as the previous one.

I liked it as well, which is why I switched it from the darker ending.

I just figured y'all would like to see what the original ending was. I may just go ahead and delete the post with the original ending so no one is confused as to which ending is the actual one.

Hmmmm, While I did enjoy seeing how it was originally going to end, I figure a zombie apocalypse or any type of apocalypse is dark enough, coupled with the behavior of a certain type of person as well.......just like a bit of a happy ending is all I will say. Given a choice between the current ending and the darker ending I would prefer the more romantic less dark version, but there may be other readers that like the darker ending.

Although, since I wrote a sequel to this one, the original ending is kind of a moot point now since we know Chimpov and Dallas survive and go on to other things.

The original ending and the subsequent posting are not considered part of the continuity of my "Looking" series. It was just a fun little peek into my mind and the writing process behind one of my best stories on ZS.
