Has anyone else seen this with their S&W?

Post by olbaid_dratsab » Mon Jan 31, 2011 10:15 pm

If you hold a 642 with a dark back drop behind and watch the firing pin as you dry fire, you can see a spark. Well mine does anyway. My Mod 60, 610,and 36 don't do it. But the 642 has a little spark the looks like it jumps from the pin to the cylinder. Its not like once in a while either. Its probably close to every other tigger pull.

I decided to test this with my 686+ in my washroom (completely dark) and unfortunately I wasn't able to reproduce the problem.

I could see it with my lights on with just black sheets behind it. Its not an orangish spark like what comes from flint either. Its more blue/white like a static spark.

I tried it with my S&W 629 and 638. No sparks.

Is your gun dirty or is there any debris in there anywhere?

Its clean. I just tried it with a Taurus and I got nothing. I've known about this for a while, but I was dryfiring and just because it was there, I was checking the lockup and saw it n thought "hmm, lets see if anyone else has this"

I shoots and locks up fine.

edit-I just went and tried it with the cylinder out. It even happens then. Sparks shoot out about 1/8''.

Only thing I could think of is maybe unburnt powder gummed up in there.

At that point, I would contact S&W and see if they have heard about that.

Good idea. Maybe ask them about sending it back to take a look at it too.

I tried this with my 642 as well. Mine sparks as well. If I squeeze the trigger slowly it does it about 60% of the time. If I do it quickly it's about 80% of the time. I did some research and found this thread which may answer some questions:

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=74558" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It basically states that this happens a lot to a wheel gun that is new. Over repeated uses the spark will diminish. Apparantly it doesn't only happen to the 642 either so it's likely not something to worry about.

I've only fired about 150-200 rounds through mine if that helps.

My 637 sparks as well. no more than 125 rounds through it .

id take a guess and say its static of the rougher textured/un worn parts or something to do with the hammer striking the pin
No one has a sense for the dramatic.

Mine has about 2-2.5k rounds through it and probably several thousand dry fires. I've got newer revolvers that don't do it. Oh well atleast its probably not a problem. Thanks

Sounds like you need to recharge your pulse-revolver.

Or contact S&W, as was already mentioned.

I literally just tried it with my 642 lights on and off and I didn't see any sparks. Mine is fairly new though, I got it in July and have fired probably 45 rounds through it at the most so who knows maybe that happens in revolvers with higher round counts.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
