S&W Bodyguard 380

Postby CB4 » Thu May 20, 2010 2:13 pm

I'm in the market for a small 380 CCW. Does anyone have any experience with this pistol yet? I know it's new. Seems pricey for a 380.

I have no experience with it, but I have to say it definitely interests me. It looks a tiny bit bigger than the Ruger LCP/Keltec P-3AT (which I have a tough time holding onto them because they are so small and light). I also like the thumb-safety, as I'm used to shooting a 1911, so I'm in the habit of flipping off the safety before shooting. Finally, the integrated laser is a nice touch. A laser can definitely be a helpful asset, especially in a small CCW gun (which are often difficult to shoot accurately because of their small size, short sight radius, and light weight).

When you figure the cost of a Ruger LCP ($300 at buds) and the cost of an LCP laser ($165 at buds) you would end up paying $465 for a similar Ruger LCP setup. With that in mind, the $432 buds is selling the Smith for seems like a reasonable deal to me.

The only thing I would check on though, is the availability of holsters and spare magazines. Being such a new firearm you might have a tough time finding accessories for it.

If it didn't have a saftey and they hadn't put the laser button in a stupid place I'd be interested (you can't activate the laser and fire with the same hand).

Kudos for a saftey that goes down for fire though (as far as I can tell).

From what I saw it's designed to be activated with the thumb or pointer finger of your support hand. As long as you instinctively go into a two-handed grip it shouldn't be hard to activate. It's not like the gun wont fire without the laser on either.

My wife wants one because she thinks it's "cute"...

I'm all for it because she's used to an auto pistol, the integrated laser, and the sights are both dovetailed so if you like you could put fiber optic sights or night sights on it if you so desired...

As far as extra mags go, it SHOULD come with an extra, and why would you need more than two mags in most personal defense situations?

If I have time to get a proper 2 handed grip I'll just use the sights. IMO lasers on handguns are mostly to help with a shot where you can't aim properly, like if you've been knocked down or your other arm is injured.YMMV

F.Y.I.,

I've known several people who have had a lot of difficulty in obtaining ANY 380 ammo in the last year or two. I don't just mean, not easy to get or expensive. I mean almost impossible to find. Zero locally and still rare online, at any price.

I know the ammo situation has gotten much better in the last few months, but look around for ammo before you jump into .380.

+1
Local gun shops only had crappy off brand ammo that gunk'd up my PK380, Cabela's had two boxes of 20 rds for $50. Ordered online from Bass Pro Shops, got a fairly decent price but had to wait 2 months to get it. Love my gun but I'm getting rid of it ASAP.

Gun looks nifty.

That .40 looks nice. I'll have to check that out when I get ready to purchase a second handgun.

Are they doing away with the M&P since they brought these to the table? they look a lot like the older Glocks I kinda like them

Nope, they're actually just an updated version of the former Sigma series. S&W is basically trying to market them towards civilian shooters, as opposed to the M&P series which is marketed towards, well, Military and Police.

As I will be moving to state with CCW soon , I have my eye on one of these as an alternative for when my G19 is too much .

Street price is actually a bit less than I had heard quoted at the SHOT Show . :P

Especially with a gun that small. That's more like a back up ankle gun.

I like the looks and features of this thing. After a year or 2 of beta testing by people with more money than me I would strongly consider picking one up for myself.

rofl I knew it

my father and myself were in gunstores during that period and listened to all the guys bitching at the counter. When some spiteful stores decide to discontinue carrying smiths and sold them at 50% off....well we were right there buying them. Keep your grudges, I will keep my smiths  .

There is a big difference between politics and shitty service. Smith & Wesson has always made quality guns and gave great customer service. I could care less what some stupid CEO does behind closed doors.
