Recommend me a full-sized 9mm with reasonable $$ magazines

Post by Blast » Mon Nov 25, 2013 10:00 pm

I'm looking for a reliable, full-sized 9mm capable of carrying at least 15 rounds whose magazines don't cost $50 each. Ideally magazines under $30 would be nice...and just to make it harder, I need it lefty or ambidextrous.
Is there anything still out there that fits this description?

sprinfield xd, smith and wesson mp, glock 17 gen 4, maybe the usp I don't remember for sure. All of those are dependable just depends on what fits your hands best.

There are a few options but like others have said the Glock 17 is top tier. I'm for the most part a Glock guy but the Springfield XD-M 9mm is one of the easiest most accurate polymer pistol I have ever shot. Worth a look as well.

M&P is out, mags are all $30-$35. Gen 4 Glocks are ambi-capable on the mag release, and if you slingshot instead of using the slide release that eliminates that problem. I know crypto rocks and rolls the Glocks Southpaw Style.

As long as there is no "Gun and Ammo" panic going on I think you can get factory pistol magazines from $25 to $40 for almost any service gun other than Sig, H&K, or some foreign import (Bersa for some reason has expensive mags)

Ruger, Glock, S&W, Springfield, even Beretta is not that bad.

I think we've been spoiled by $10-$15 Pmags. $30 isn't too much to pay for a quality mag that functions well and will likely last a lifetime, but $10 is too much for something that doesn't work. With that in mind I like my Walther PPX, was $460 out the door, factory mags seem to be about $30-$32. No manual safety and the mag release is reversible.

Ugh...I was afraid Glock would rise to the top. They just feel really awkward in my hand.

The S&W M&P is what I have now. Unless it's magazines have come down they've been close to $50 at most places even before the Big Fear. The new pistol will be the "bump in the night" firearm so a rail would be nice to mount a flashlight or is that a bad idea? Some people say that'll get me shot in the face when I'm aiming.

A friend has the Springfield XD and it proved accurate in my hands. Maybe I need to take another look at that one.

I was curious to see if anyone suggested the Beretta 92F. What downsides are there to this pistol?

Thanks, everyone!

That's where you pull back sharply on the slide and let it go after inserting a fresh magazine instead of using the slide release.

The mags are around $30-ish now, they're jsut out of stock everywhere. Brownell's shows them as backordered at $34 for the 17rd version (9mm) and even Smith's website shows them below $50, but OOS. If you like the M&P and can run it, continue to do so. People who think your light will get you shot will only be right if you're using it wrong. IT sounds like you could benefit from a bit of pistol training, tbh. The money you'd spend on a new gat (I'm assuming you don't mean an M&P Shield, and that the current M&P is either the full or compact size) could buy a quality class and a good light, maybe with enough left for a good light-friendly holster. A good class will teach you how to employ a light momentarily for rapid target ID and engagement without wandering around with your light on like in the movies.

"Slingshot" means grabbing the rear of the slide and yanking it back all the way and letting it slam forward rather than using the slide release. Pistols with no external safety and ambi mag releases are ambi as long as the slingshot method is used. Some will poo-poo the slingshot method for one-handed reloads, but there's the boot method, the belt method, or the somewhat dangerous "between the knees" reload. The M&P (no safety) is ambi as well. Recommend the APEX trigger for them, as it makes them at least as good as a Glock trigger. Why switch to an XD if the Smitty's work?

I vote bide your time waiting for mags, and practice more.

But since you asked:
Downsides to the XD: beavertail safety can go fuck itself with a rusty nailbat.
Downsides to the M9/92: DA/SA triggers suck. Heavy gun. Slide mounted safeties suck donkeyballs.

A Beretta92FS was my first pistol purchase. Great duty sized gun. I feel like a 90's B-Movie action hero when I shoot mine.

Downside is that its a rather large pistol to conceal, and that DA first shot kinda sucks, but I've found that the "D" trigger spring helps a lot. Magazines were priced comparable to Glock prices on midwayusa a while back. Be sure to use factory Beretta magazines.

I see some of the Berettas at the store come with an accessory rail, but last time I checked, IIRC, they didn't come with a removable front sight. Rules out night sights unless farmed out to have the front sight drilled.

My 92 was relegated to an office gun once I bought my Glock 19.

mags are sub $30, which is what I see g17 mags go for (here). I'd just recommend the glock, but the above is a legit option.

If you shoot left handed, learn to use your (whatever the controls) pistol left handed. :)
