Kaboomed my Beretta 96 :(

Thought you folks might like to see this...
This 96 was my first and favorite sidearm. It's fired thousands of rounds over the years with no complaints.

As you can see, the case ruptured and blew the transfer bar out through the right side grip. The trigger, grip, and transfer bar spring are trashed, but thankfully there were no injuries and no other components damaged.

After a complete teardown with cleaning and inspection, I'm in the process of rebuilding it. Only major upgrade is a change to Hogue grips. I'll post a photo once it's finished.

The moral of the story: wear eye protection!

Pfff....that'll buff right out.

Seriously, though, that's some pretty awesome damage. Glad you're okay.

Have you figured out why it boomed yet?

Also how did it cause the trigger to break like that?

Sadly, no. Even though I can pinpoint by the powder soot exactly where the blowout occurred, it still cycled and ejected the offending cartridge. I figure it either fired out-of-battery or a case ruptured.

This one I do know. When the transfer bar blew out, it applied forward and torsion to the trigger trunnion. The forward pressure slammed the trigger against the inside of the guard, snapping it in half.
One advantage to having the plastic trigger vs. the metal one; a metal trigger would've cracked the frame.

I personally would not consider rebuilding it until I knew what caused it and had the frame checked by a pro.

Duly noted, but 1) I will never know why it KB'd and 2) the frame is fine.

What does the slide look like? Factory ammo? Do you still have the case?

How do you know the frame is fine? What steps hav you taken to ensure the same problm that caused your pistol to fly into pieces in your hand didn't damage the frame? If you're well-acquainted with stress fractures and detecting them on finished surfaces, then disregard and I apologize for doubting you. Bare minimum, assuming it was factory ammo an suff I'd contact Beretta about getting it rebuilt. If it was a handload or you did something Beretta would tell you not to then disregard all of the above.

If my pistol exploded in my hand, I'd want to know why and how.

I don't think I could bring myself to trust any gun after it personally KB'd on me.

Holy hell and maybe wear gloves. I would imagine you got dinged with something on the hand.

It's none of my business, but I would send it to Beretta USA and have them look at it. They have X-rays that will at the very least be able to see any cracks in the frame or the slide. I'm sure they would want to know about this.

I tasted a issued Beretta slide (it knocked out my 2 front teeth and chipped another), and it doesn't suite my taste buds. They have since fixed that widely experienced problem. They would hate to see anyone get hurt with their firearms, and I'm sure they will be more then happy to look at your sidearm.

i had my first AR go KB on me (luckily no injury to anyone)... I'm with some of the others on not being so quick to "trust" the frame without an almost forensic lookover. It may cycle any normal rounds fine, but what if you were to have another failure like this one.. the frame survived this one, but how would it fare against another? Obviously, you're gonna do what you're gonna do, and I'm probably overly cautious when it comes to possible disfigurement or loss of life and limb.

Holy Hell!
Glad you're ok.

+1 (or whatever it's up to now) on contacting Beretta.
My $0.02.

Were you shooting handloads? Or hot factory ammo like Buffalo Bore?

Damn, glad you're OK.

Thank goodness it was a Beretta and not a Glock or this thread would have gone on for 14 pages, then be L&B.

Glad you're all right. I'm with the "get it looked at" crowd.

 I'm in the get it checked crowd. If it blew that hard, I'm not sure I'd salvage anything from it other than the sights.

I have to give a +1 to the "get it looked at" consensus. The last thing you want is to finish rebuilding it only to have it blow up on you again and possibly hurt someone. Glad you came out of it unharmed.

Retire it into a display box with a plaque that reads "no injuries"
and buy a new one

Contact Beretta. They're going to want to look at it.

If they don't, then I'd be concerned...

In the IT world, we start troubleshooting like this:

Keep us updated bud. I'd like to hear how the manufacturer handles this one.
