What's the best you've ever read?

Postby EatenAlive » Tue Jun 19, 2012 10:34 pm

What is the best zombie fiction (novel, short story, comic, blog, Twitter feed, anything) that you've ever read?

Do you tend to read digial or physical more (as in, reading on a Kindle or reading a paperback)?

The best I've read is the "A New World" series by John O'Brien. Nothing special about it, just liked it.

Check out my Zombie Novels!; Phoenix Rising; ...and the sequel: Through the Ashes

I was never a comic book reader, so it wasn't until the show came out that I started reading the comics, but I LOVE them! It's given me incentive to try out other comics and see how I like them.

Piece of cake... it is easily Feed by Mira Grant. Followed by the other two in the trilogy: Deadline and Blackout. Best zombie novels, hands-down.

I don't really read very much but I recently downloaded the free audio podcast of "We're Alive" on iTunes. I have been listening to it every night for a while and I've finished the whole story up until the current episode. It has so much suspense and it is such a great book for being free. It's not just read to you, It's acted out, and explains the stories of many different characters. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't already!.

I'll second We're Alive, though as stated it is an audio play with great production and I'm also addicted.

White Flag of the Dead was pretty good. But it did get to be a little unrealistic by the end of the series. I like the Day by Day series and am waiting for the third book which comes out September 1st. And The Morning star Strain was good until the author died and a ghost writer finished the last book.

Reading the last book in that trilogy now. Very interesting take on the genre. Rise Again is also a really good book.

I would Third "We're Alive". Awesome, AWESOME podcast theater production. Other than that, I have not read much zombie stories.

Without a doubt, The Stephen King series, "The Dark Tower." Paperback. I know it's not a single book, but the series was amazing! Best read i've ever come across. Couldn't wait for each new book to come out. :ohdear:

Good:

Rise Again by Ben Tripp
Eden by Tony Monchinski
Ressurection by Tim Curran, also Dead Sea but not really a "zombie" book
Z1N1 by Mitchell Layne Cook
Infection by Sean Schubert
Dead Tide by Stephen A. North
Another Place to Die by Sam North
Monster Island, Monster Nation, Monster Planet by David Wellington (or any book by David Wellington)
World War Z by Max Brooks
DBDA by J L Bourne
Dead City by Joe McKinney also Apocalypse of the Dead, Flesh Eaters and Quarantined
The Infection by Craig DiLouie
Plague of the Dead by ZA Recht

I could go on and on but....

I've also read some real stinkers but for the sake of indentification, I won't be so brash...
O God of earth and altar, Bow down and hear our cry.
Our earthly rulers falter, Our people drift and die.
The walls of gold entombe us, The swords of scorn divide.
Take not thy thunder from us, But take away our pride.

I haven't read a lot of zombie stuff, other than in the fiction section here. Mom journal is my favorite, but there are a few very good ones.

I thought World War Z was great as well. I haven't read a lot of zombie themed fiction and am excited to see the suggestions here because frankly the genre seems pretty hit or miss to me and it helps to have a recommendation. Zone One by Colson Whitehead had gotten some good press when it came out but I was pretty bored by it. Not because it didn't have a lot of action, it just didn't pull me in. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was fun and got me to read something I never would have otherwise (Pride and Prejudice).

PS - Oh, I should say I am very disappointed to read what they are doing with World War Z the movie. From what I understand they have completely abandoned the plot and theme of the book and have gone through numerous re-writes. At this point it sounds like it will be a generic zombie movie with a snappy title...and with a much, much bigger budget than most zombie movies.

Also for what it's worth Joe McKinney's new book "Mutated" comes out tomorrow. He is hands down the best zombie writer in my opinion and this will be the fourth book in his Dead World series.

For comics, The Walking Dead. No question.

As far as novel series go it's a coin toss between Mira Grant's Newsflesh trilogy and Joe McKinney's Dead World series.

I'm picking up great reading ideas here
For me it's Rot and Ruin & Dust and Decay by Jonathan Maberry. His Patient Zero is good too but I prefer the former two (even though they're marketed as Youth Fiction
I purchased them on iBooks as its instant.

World War Z probably. If not than day by day by J.L.Bourne I couldn't put either one down once I started.
