I just finished the book "Cold Camp", I thought it was a great book (aside from the right-wing ranting  ).

I was wondering if anyone here could suggest any similar books, preferably with less political ranting from either side. I like the everyman survival bent to "Cold Camp".

I have the Max Brooks stuff already. I have read and really enjoyed Richard Marchinko's works.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance

I just finished "lights out" , was pretty good, not a lot of political leanings. Also, "things fall apart", a little political mostly middle of the road though. Very similiar to lights out but more into the response of government to a national crisis. I just bought "the road," seems good so far, and hear there is a movie coming out at the end of this month ?

Thanks for the suggestions Stimpy. I will look into "Lights Out" and "Things Fall Apart". I have seen some folks talking about "The Road" but am not sure if that is one I want to read right now, seems a little to dark for my current mindset.

Thank you

I read both of those, "Lights Out" was okay and "The Road" is about as black a book as you will ever read.

You might like:
"The Postman"-very good, and different than the movie
"Lucifer's Hammer"- I read it long ago and didn't appreciate it until years later
"First Blood"- Not a PAW type scenario, more survival and combat tactics oriented. Rambo is not all cartoony in the book, by the end he has snapped into a hard core murderer.
"Hatchet" or any of the "Brian" sequels by Gary Paulson. Even his mini guide called "Guts" is bad ass. The first book called Hatchet is about a kid who gets stranded in the Canadian woods for months with nothing but a hatchet. Very good, very REAL, you might want to read this one first, it's fast and awesome. The others above might take a while to get through.

SInce I have no shame, I will shamelessly promote my own book, White Flag of the Dead.

http://www.amazon.com/White-Flag-Dead-J ... 832&sr=8-1

It's a little more expensive than the average mass produced book, but you get over 400 pages (Normal size font) of zombie fun!

Regarding book suggestions: You mentioned Marchinko's books. If you enjoyed his work why not try out Black Hawk Down or Lone Survivor? Those books are written about real bad asses, non-fiction. Imagine what it was like for those men back in the early 90's, fast roping from a black hawk into "the Mog" and the subsequent battle of their small numbers versus thousands.

Good luck.

I posted a review of The War in 2020 by Ralph Peters some time ago in this forum. Linky:

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=39848&hilit=the+war+in+2020

It's a little dark, but nowhere near The Road (which should be subtitled "What to read right before you jump off a bridge"). Has a couple of different TEOTWAWKI angles that are explored, and it's heavy on military action (you said you liked Marchinko).

Also, I end up rereading Starship Troopers about twice a year. Love it, love it, love it! The book is nothing like the movie. There's a bit of a political bend, but it's not overt. You'll probably finish it in days. Space Marines in powered exoarmor with mini nukes - - woot!

Who wrote "Cold Camp"? I can't seem to find it online. I keep getting a Goosebumps episode in my searches.

"Cold Camp" is in the public domain apparently. Here is a link to the site that hosts a PDF copy of it:

It's not about zombies, it's about survival in an occupied America similar to "Red Dawn" but better written.

Just finished "the road," awesome "PAW" book. Make sure when you read it, you don't have any loaded firearms sitting around. You might be tempted to "off" yourself before you finish reading the book. Can't wait for the movie to come out at the end of the month, the trailers' are outstanding.

I agree with Raptorman on these reads and will post a few more. Black Hawk Down, loved the movie and the book is much much better. Lone Survivor was great book and wow you have to read it.

I liked all the books in the Rogue Warrior series the non fiction to the fiction books.

Check out these as well-

House to House (Great book the action almost made me feel I was there)

Generation Kill (loved the mini series and the book was great as well)

One Bullet Away (Goes along with generation kill. Im getting ready to read it)

Band Of Brothers

One Second After

Eden (www.permutedpress.com) I loved this book a lot of action and every type of zombie you can think of. The author is super cool as well. A big shout out to Tony :D

Day by Day Armageddon (great book its what got me into zombie fiction and writing)

Among The Living (great book fast read and a lot of action)

Oasis (I liked the take on how you can be infected and it makes me look at the hospitals a lot differnt)

Left Behind (The series great christian fiction)

Dresden Files (The whole series awesome. I loved the TV show and the books kick ass)

There are so many that I have read that I cant think of right now. I read im sure 100 books a year or more. Im in a few book exchange so that helps find a lot of great titles.
