New Toy: USSG Baikal MP220 Side-by-side "Coach Gun"

Post by SpetsNazGRU » Sun May 13, 2012 6:01 pm

I was at a big, locally-owned gun store on Friday and saw them unpacking and putting locks on some neat-looking, compact, two trigger, double barrel, side-by-side shotguns. I liked the look of them and asked what they were. I was told that they were Russian Baikals! At that point, I just had to play with one. It was very light, compact, well-built and basic, with chrome-lined barrels and a rather pretty walnut stock. It seemed like a perfect, super simple 12 ga to complement to my S-12. Great SHTF/"Zombie Apocalypse" gun! I mean, with the chrome-lined barrels and the super simple, double-trigger action, there is very little to maintain or that can break on you. They also easily break down into two pieces, which fit into any backpack. These guns are kind expensive for what they are, but this (typically over-priced) store actually had them at some of the lowest Internet prices (without the shipping and transfer fee!) They were $279.99. I really wanted to get one right there and then, but they seemed kind of expensive and I am pretty low on funds right now.

I did my research on when I got home on Friday night. Remington used to import these and sell them as the "Remington Spartan". Now, they are imported by a company called USSG and called the "MP220". That store also has the longer, fancier and much more expensive models with external triggers and chokes.

The next day, I stopped by a big sports outfitter store in order to pick up some ammo and other small stuff. Out of curiosity, I asked to take a look at one of their Stoeger "Coach Guns". These are made in Turkey. The build quality was FAR worse than on those Russian Baikals at the local store and they were asking over $400 for them!!! The wood was shitty, the metal had a lot of noticeable little defects and the bores were not chrome-lined. I then realized that those Baikals really were a good deal and that I needed to have one. I drove to the local store, picked out the nicest looking Baikal coach gun that they had and bought it. I really shouldn't be spending money on more guns right now, but I just couldn't help myself. Can't resist the cheap Russian stuff! I really love it so far. Here's the gun porn (from undressing to the "cum shot" :) ):

Very very nice. I've been lusting after one of those for a while.

Did they have any with hammers or in stainless?

This store had ones which the same size, with chokes and external hammers, but those ones were over $400! Didn't see any stainless ones, but USSG might import some. By the way, like I mentioned, the bores ARE hard-chromed.

Thanks for the info.

I want one for hard use and it is often wet where I live, so bluing gets nasty fast. It would still function just fine and for the price different I just might go with blued and let it get all nasty! ;)

Might just Duracoat (or something similar) the exterior.

They are sexy Russian Ladies.
I had one with choke tubes, dark stained walnut and external hammers years ago but found that it looked so good I couldn't bring myself to shoot it much.
I traded it for a Norinco M14S.
Didn't like the Norinco and can't recollect what I traded it for but I remeber being massively unimpressed with the M14 as a whole, heavy, unwieldy but functioned fine.
I wish I had kept the Russian.

I've got one like that!!
Just really old haha.
Bluing isn't that flash, butt-stock is cracked(kinda badly), but the metalwork on the reciever has some intricate patterns on it and says 'MADE IN USSR' which is cool! :D
Here's a little vid of mine:

Cheers,
Sean.

P.S. Congrats on the purchase!
I'd rather have it, and not need it, than need it, and not have it!

This is my personal favorite Baikal SxS-specific movie scene, from the great, classic, 90's pulp gangster film Brat (Brother):

Anyone know if his trick, involving modifying #5 bird shot shells to fire some nasty shrapnel, would actually work? In Brat 2, he comes to the US to kick some ass, breaks into a construction site and makes a basic gun "samopal" from scratch. LOL.

EDIT: WTF? Embedding a YouTube video with specific time doesn't seem to work or am I missing something? Just copy and paste the link if you are interested, I suppose.

Two reasons:

1. Finger prints look really ugly on blued guns and promote corrosion. Sometimes, when I am handing such a weapon and don't feel like wiping it off with a silicone cloth afterwards, I just put on these gloves.

2. Gun preservatives are messy, hard to scrub off and are mildly toxic. Once again, sometimes, when I don't feel like scrubbing my hands afterwards, I just put on these gloves.

I shot mine the other day without a recoil pad, needless to say I'd like to know if you like yours and if so what kind is it?

Thx

My father had an antique double barrel coach gun when I was a kid, but I'm pretty sure the barrel was shorter than 16" (it would be illegal now). The thing kicked like a horse and we were stupid enough to load 3-3.5" magnum shells into it. We also took it duck hunting and killed ducks with it. Too bad my uncle pretty much stole it from the estate or I'd love to own it today....

Nice toy. Now go shoot it!

That’s my wife’s gun by the bed; loaded with some #1 Buck and a leather butt-cuff holding another six rounds.

She loves it, but doesn’t care for the stouter slug and OO buck rounds. It’s a great little gun and simple-stupid...I love the chrome lined barrels.

It does in fact appear to have better build quality than a Stoeger .

I had one for years and miss it .

DEFINITELY better than the stoeger coach, and a redonkulous price! Good pickup for sure. Nice pictures too
