I like the M91/30 and I currently have one that was built in 1932, making it the oldest rifle I own.

One thing to watch out for is what is called "Sticky Bolt", which basically means the bolt will stick after firing a couple rounds and require a bit of force to open. There's a few ways to fix that and there's plenty of YouTube videos and a few threads here on ZS on that subject.

Another thing is Mosins can be kind of picky about ammo, or at least mine is anyway. My Mosin absolutely hates lacquer coated ammo, like the crappy HotShot stuff Century imported a few years back.

A fun thing to do with a Mosin, besides taking it to the range, is to look up its history. There used to be a guy on YouTube called "MilitarySurplusGuy" and he had a ton of info on Mosins. I don't know if he's still on YouTube or not, but it'd be a good idea to try to contact him and see what kind of info he can get on your particular rifle.

Also, we're going to want to see pics of your rifle. :)

It was made in Russia in 1936 at the Izhevsk armory. It has all matching original serial numbers.

I like my 91/30 because it was cheap, the ammo is cheap and it is extremely reliable. While I'd love to have a Mauser and and enfield, they, and their ammo cost more.

Please do post a pic or two of yours, we love pics of guns!

If you haven't already found this, the following site is an exhaustive reference on the Mosin Nagant:

Upload pics to Photobucket or whatever online photo-sharing site you want, copy the IMG tags, paste them in a reply post and voila, photos on ZS.

Very cool dude. I have two Mosin Nagants and still contemplate getting more.

Careful... They tend to multiply.

I bought my first at a yard sale a few years ago now I have nine of them.

Mosin Nagant at Zcon 2011:

I also own two. One "hex" receiver, one round receiver. Fun to shoot, cheap, cheap to feed, what's not to love?

LOL

I, too, am planning on buying another to 'modernize' a little. synthetic stock, optics, etc. In fact when I bought the 'hex' receiver one, I had actually set out to buy one for this purpose, but ended up buying this one instead.

THAT'S HOW IT STARTS!!!

Next thing you know, you're this guy:

Or too many Mosin Nagants! :D

Having something to cart them all in is kinda nice too. Lol

I bought one from classic arms. Ishy hex reciever, very very nice. Not the nicest one I've seen, but I took a chance on it and I'm please. After shipping and the transfer fee mine came out to about $135

You just have to keep your eyes open. I've purchased about 4 or 5 in the last year (91/30's, 44's, and 38's) and none of them took more than $100 out of my pocket.

I have a box of surplus ammo but I'm leary on using it be cause of the corrosive primer.

I know that you clean a rifle after shooting. Just didn't know if using that kind ammo makes more difficult to clean it.
