This may help. Sounds like a similar headstamp.

Can you get a good pic of the headstamp?

First guess is its chinese milsurp.
Check the bullet and the case with a magnet.
It doesnt look like a steel case in the photos though.

The reason Im guessing chinese is that "could" be a 101 instead of a 10 1.

My cell phone wont take a clear picture of the head stamp. It is magnetic though.

its almost certainly some combloc Mauser then. Ive never seen old steel-case .30-06. It cant be x54R as theres no rim on it.

Im voting for either hungarian or bulgarian heavy ball ammo, 8mm mauser.

I assume you just mean to see if it chambers, but this still makes me nervous. Maybe I'm just a worrier, though.

He's doing it for science. If we don't see anymore posts, we'll assume the experiment failed.

Right to see if it chambers. Although the cartoonish idea came to me to tie a string to the trigger and the other end to a door knob

if the headstamp code reads like a lot of other combloc it was made in bulgaria ( 10) at plant nunber 1 in 19(63) but as far as caliber... hell if i know
