Okay. Upper is finally on the way. It is less than Ideal, but for the price I couldn't pass it up.

Del Ton 14.5" upper with pinned phantom for under $300.

What can I say, I could not pass it up. With baby Caenus being born two weeks ago, I am slightly shy on spending $620-ish on a BCM 14.5" upper or a 16" upper for a little less plus ammo. It is going to cost him $15 to ship it and I should have it whenever he gets to UPS to ship it (from Texas). I am not super thrilled with the 1/9 twist as I originally intended to stock 70+ grain HP ammo, but I'm sure I'll be able to find something it likes to shoot and I've found some 69gr HP's at Ammo to Go. First I'll probably stock up on M855.

Since it is lacking a BCG, I will spend the extra cash to pick up a BCM BCG. I have a spare charging handle laying around here somewheres. For about $370 I am getting a 1/2 Del-ton, 1/2 BCM upper. I didn't think I could beat that so hopefully the BCM BCG will work well with the Del-Ton. Does anyone know of any issues with that combination of BCG/upper?

I know the Del-ton is lacking some of the other features that would make it pro grade (like M4 feed ramps, F marked front sight post, etc), but I think this will make a nice compliment to my LR308 as a go to rifle.

Total cost for this build is right at $600 including shipping. Not including 7 mags and the Eotech, which I already had.

Sounds good to me man! I mean, look at it this way- how many rounds are going to be fired in full auto from your gun? If your answer is "zero", then you don't really need M4 ramps. As far as the 1:9 twist- I had a DPMS with that rate and its not as bad as people make it out to be. Granted, I wasn't firing super hot and heavy loads out of it, but with regular old 55gr rounds, it was plenty accurate.

No, no problem here. I just don't want to put the trigger guard on until I'm ready for final assembly. It's not getting it in, it's getting it back out since I don't have a punch and don't want to pick one up if I don't have to.

Nice build too. I like the color of all the Magpul stuff. Is it as grey as it looks in your pictures?

It looks pretty grey. I like the green/grey tinge to it. I don't see the "mint green" color as a lot of folks do. It's actually a great color in AZ. ACU colors are great in the desert here. Most of the plants (palo verde, etc) are that kinda mint green anyway.

I've been eyeballing that foliage green MOE furniture at the local fun shop, it just appeals to me somehow.

I agree about foliage being a good color. My rifle is all magpul also and I was skeptical at first but I like how it turned out.

It will work fine. Del-ton uses a standard 'keyhole' upper which is used by other manufacturers as well. At least when I bought one from them. http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=5357

The weak link with del-ton (in my mind) is the bolt and carrier group. Mine wasn't properly staked and i'm not sure the bolts are MPI tested. So going with BCM you are good to go.

Some of the del-tons do have m4 feed ramps but it was an option.

Here are the stats:

14.5" with pinned Phantom (pinned is an upgrade)
Chrome Lined Barrel (upgrade)
M4 feed ramps (upgrade)

It will cost $20 for M4 feed ramps.

Sounds like you're doing good!

Also, have you checked into a POF BCG/Bolt?

Turned out great!
I took the consolation prize in Ranter's free CFP-90 thread. He sent me a pack he wouldn't sell (it was a little dusty) for shipping only. Great guy!

Done. Final touches were to paint. I do not like black rifles, and the AR profile is very recognizable. Since most of my time shooting/hiking/etc is in the desert, I have chosen ACU for the most versatility in this area. So here is how it went:
First, I removed most of the foliage color furniture, and taped the trigger guard (I didn't want to spend the time removing it) and then taped over the barrel section that is under the handguards and the gas tube. I removed the safety selector as I wanted to leave that black, and thus high contrast. Finally, I stuffed a piece of paper towel in the mag well.
Image

Next, I painted the entire thing sand color:
Image

Next, I put on my first color, OD green using the following stencil:
Image
Image

Finally, I layered the final color (foliage) staggering it across the OD:

Then reassembled. My build is now complete:
