Thinking of a big bore AR, looking for opinions.

Post by emclean » Mon Dec 17, 2018 8:22 am

I have the bug for a big bore AR-15. looking at the cost of ammo, I will be reloading for it, and with that in mind I want a straight walled case. I have found the .50 Beowulf, and the .450 Bushmaster.
which is better for a range toy?

I was looking at the same thing a year ago and came to the conclusion that while IMHO the .458 SOCOM was the best all-around performer in this category, I chose the .450 Bushmaster because I buy .451 caliber bullets in bulk to reload .45 ACP.

My buddy who has a couple 45-70 rifles went the .458 route for the same reasons.

Both are good pig rounds for where we hunt here in central texas...lots of scrub brush and rarely a shot >100 yards or so. I assume the .50 is similarly effective within that performance envelope but no personal experience with that round.

I'd go for 450 bushy because of bullet selection in .451 and .452.

Plus, there are more 450bushy rifles out there which tells me it's most likely to have the most longevity (like bolt guns and such)

.450 Bushmaster seems to have the best following, mostly because of some weird hunting restrictions in certain areas requiring a straight-walled case. That’s the route I would go as well.

I can't speak to the 50 but a friend has a 450 and it is a ton of fun to shoot and has been reliable each time I've shot it.
It also seems to be more popular.
It's the direction I'd go if just looking for a fun range toy.
