Latest build "Pinky" ... SBR redux

Post by 91Eunozs » Sat Jul 13, 2013 5:04 pm

New posts at the bottom...

SBR tax stamp came in last year but I never really posted the rebuild when I switched over to the DD 10.3" barrel and started adding in more lightweight bits like the titanium barrel and castle nuts, take down pins, etc.

Regardless, a co-worker just started his own Cerakote/powder coating side-business and I volunteered to be his first customer! Finally stripped the gun back down for Prison Pink Cerakoted upper and lower receivers.

Gonna go ahead and order the stainless Odin Works 10.5" lightweight barrel and a titanium 2A lightweight gas block as well as another JP stainless LMOS Bolt carrier to replace the same item already in this rifle...same weight, only polished stainless instead of black coated stainless.

This BCG will go into the "James" build until I can afford a Boomfab.

Pics below...

-------original thread-------

...AKA: Miss Piggy when employed alongside the pig killer "Kermit"

Finally finished Pinky this afternoon...while the Alarm guy was out putting in some more "stuff" at the house and another dude was here giving us an estimate on expanding our patio and landscaping. No idea what they think we're into as I'm sitting there at the kitchen table building a pink AR while my wife is talking business!

At any rate, here's the rest of the parts ready to go on:

Image
Image
installed the gas tube...thought I had one but couldn't find it so had to order another...

JP Enterprises lightweight stainless steel Bolt Carrier and WMD NiB-X bolt/cam pin:
Image
Image
Next to the PSA M-16 BCG currently in Pinky's FDE twin sister "Sandy"...have a few BCM extractor, etc. bolt upgrade kits that'll go in this one plus a couple spare stripped bolts I picked up last week. Still trying to score another BCM BCG for Sandy...this one will eventually be relegated to backup/spare part status.

Image
Image

And a couple pics out in the back yard...Taking it to my buddy's ranch in the morning to test fire/get the sights adjusted; hopefully convert a couple feral pigs to bacon (w/Kermit) while we're there too...
Image
Image

Parts List:
Umbrella Corp forged lower; miscellaneous PSA and Midway lower parts...ACT trigger group though (made by Geissle but not a match grade trigger)
PSA Buffer tube, carbine length spring and carbine weight buffer; Noveske end plate w/QD plug
Rainier Arms stripped upper with PSA upper parts kit...This upper/barrel will eventually go on the next build (Magpul Grey furniture), & this rifle will get a lighter-weight upper/pencil-profile barrel
JP Enterprises lightweight stainless steel bolt carrier; WMD NiB-X bolt and cam; BCM-sourced firing pin (from my spares pile); BCM/VLTOR charging handle (medium)
Daniel Defense 14.5" 5.56 M-4 profile barrel, 1:7 twist with pinned AAC 51T flash hider (to fit my AAC 7.62 suppressor awaiting the tax stamp); carbine-length gas system
YHM clamp-on gas block/folding front sight...will eventually get rid of the rail section lower and just use simple (lighter) bracket bottoms on this rifle
Magpul Pink MOE furniture, enhanced trigger guard & black MBUS rear sight

Still need to source a sling...considering another ARES Husky Amentum but since this will be the wife's primary rifle (until our daughter is old enough), she'll choose what works for her.

Well, according to our mostly accurate bathroom scale, anywhere between 5 lb, 8oz to 6 lb, 2 oz...depending on who weighs themself, then reweighs whilst holding Pinky. Call it somewhere around 6 lb even...without a mag.

Lightest rifle I've ever owned... :awesome:

I know I can go lighter w/a carbon free float shroud & go crazy on lightweight parts, polymer lower, etc. but I think with the few extra ounces to be had w/a lighter barrel and a slightly lighter upper receiver (probably the Rainier Arms without the fwd assist), it'll do just fine.

Shot real nice! Capable of better groups than my aim today, that's for sure... I'll blame the chlorine in my eyes from swimming last night and getting up at 0400 because I couldn't sleep!

Image
Image

No hogs today...no snakes, frogs, turtles or gophers for that matter...but I was able to kill 3 targets. First one was just function checking and slow fire/sighting in, standing at ~ 25 yards or so...intentionally shooting a little low to ensure I didn't over shoot the back stop:
Image

Next one moved it up a bit but really just plinking and continuing to function check the rifle at this point...shot resting my off hand against the tree at ~ 30 yards:
Image

Last target I shot today (only had ~ an hour to shoot this morning), three 20-rd mags worth from the same spot by the tree at ~ 30 yards... not counting the few rounds checking the sights on the little bar code in the upper left corner:
Image

Decent(ish) groups, but I was all over the place today; flyers everywhere and I never really hit COM...very poor breath control and frankly couldn't focus for shit (vision, not attention).

I was also a bit surprised how often my left hand slid up into contact w/the gas block on this short carbine-length hand guard while bracing against the tree (ouch!)...note to self: wear gloves dumb ass!

All the brass kicked out between 3-4 O'Clock but left a hell of a "stripe" on the upper brass deflector...and kicked out much farther than either Kermit, Sandy or the other rifle I built (and sold); something like 8-9 feet! Maybe due to the lighter BCG? Dunno... and don't really care truth be told. She shoots well and consistently, with no failures whatsoever on ~ 100 rounds or so of mixed Independence and PMC XM193.

Planning a red dot optic at some point soon too. Will obviously do better next time when I bring this one and "Sandy" back out to shoot for accuracy from the bench at ~ 50ish yards or so.

All in all, great shooting little rifle...happy to have her in the stable.

As the new title indicates... Already SBR'd my daughter's rifle when the tax stamp cleared last year, now time to wrap this build up.

Completely disassembled/stripped the receivers this morning. Degreased with brake cleaner and now baking them at 200 degrees for an hour or so to make sure all the grease is gone.

Image
Image

Dropping them off with a coworker who just started a side business doing powder coat and Cerakote...volunteered to be his first customer!

Image

New parts will be a polished stainless JP BCG, 10.5" Odin Works lightweight barrel and a titanium 2A Arms gas block.

Image
Image
Image

Will remove the backup sights entirely as this is basically just a pimptastic range toy for my daughter.

This 10.5" DD barrel will get a new upper receiver and handguard, and likely a normal FSB instead of this low profile gas block to serve as a secondary 5.56 upper for one of my 300BLK rifles.

Guess I never took pics of the SBR barrel swap, etc., but here's a couple when I swapped out the barrel nut for a V7 titanium one back around Christmas:

Image

...and one of the custom RIT dyed magpul PMags...picked up some "sand" colored mags and just used an entire bottle of RIT Petal Pink in near boiling water; 5 or so minutes got them all pretty close.

My friend just sent me some pics... Guess this one will get finished next!

Image

He's re-Cerakoting the buffer tube tonight to ensure no black threads show once I reassemble the lower...dropping them by mañana so more pics soon!

Now then, do I wait for the new barrel, gas tube and BCG or just go with what I have for now and stay focused on the "James" build?

Edit: Just succumbed to my low impulse control and ordered the stainless Odin Works lightweight barrel, so that part is decided! Can wait on the 2A Arms titanium gas block and polished stainless JP LMOS BCG though.

Coming together... Can't believe I used to drive these pins in with a punch and hammer. Hemostats to hold the roll pin until I get it started then just squeeze, adjust and squeeze w/the Knipex pliers. Easy peasy...
Image

Coming together...and...yeah...it's certainly pink.

Image

Even in really poor lighting it's almost too much...and I still haven't installed the handguard! Was considering painting the delta ring and the "T" part of the charging handle as well, but definitely need something to break it up. Maybe some Unicorns and rainbows! Google our highschool mascot: New Braunfels, TX...you'll see where I'm going with this! :awesome:

That stainless Odin Works barrel has already shipped so this one will be complete soon. Pelican doesn't do a pink case as far as I can tell so I'll pick up an SKB and get the foam custom water jet cut at that place in San Marcos that did my others... Getting close to complete on this one!

New Odin Works ultralight stainless barrel waiting when I got home from work!

Under 1# and man is their shipping fast!

Image

Image

Will normally run just the stainless thread protector over the barrel since this gun will have a dedicated polished titanium Crux thread-on can, but have an AAC 51T flash hider for when I want to run one of my AAC cans. As you can see though, the delta ring as well as the charging handle are conspicuously absent...when I was discussing how overwhelmingly pink this rifle is with my wife she said "Hell, you've gone this far, may as well go full retard..."

So my buddy has about an ounce of the Prison Pink left and is going to do the delta ring as well as the very tip of the charging handle. I took the latch off too so it'll just be the "T" part of the handle.

Only issue is when I was testing the BCG, it's very snug in the upper...gonna get my dremel and a flappy sanding wheel to thin out the Cerakote inside the upper a bit. Hey, lesson learned for my buddy...and me too as his very first customer. Thickness matters!

That's a pretty, uh, pin, build lol. Awesome rifle. May I ask how you coated the buffer tube and receiver? All the plastic parts are RIT dye? If so I have some silly projects for myself. Great build and post, keep it up!

Receivers and buffer, as well as the red dot mount, delta ring and part of the charge handle, are Ceracoated in Prison Pink... Similar to powder coating but liquid instead of powder.

Furniture is Magpuls pink furniture...

Mags are Magpul sand (basically white) that I dyed with a bottle of RIT petal pink dye in near-boiling water for ~5 minutes after disassembly.

Other bits are CMC pink trigger, pink Battle Rms Development ambi-selector, and various fuschia, pink or raw titanium... or stainless steel (barrel and some bolts).

Still need the shiny stainless JP lightweight BCG (same as the one in here now, but polished instead of black), the 2A Arms titanium gas block, and the V7 mag release latch (all out of stock), but Pinky's pretty much complete...again!

Image

Image

Image

Image

5 pounds, 3.8 ounces with red dot and thread protector, but without sling or magazine... Will lose another 0.5oz or so w/the new gas block and latch.

Image

To prove the BCG is in there (had to cover the trust info!):
Image

Will try to get out to the ranch this weekend to re-zero with the new barrel...next up for this rifle is to get a hard case and custom cut the foam, but still waiting for the tax stamp to clear on the Crux suppressor that will reside primarily on this gun.

Posting from my phone so wish me luck!

Got her out to the ranch and had a few FTE malfunctions until I lubed the heck out of the bolt and ran a suppressor. Shot well, but want to pull the gas block to pin gauge the gas port before truly zeroing it in.

Image

Pay no attention to the .45 ACP-sized holes! Got a little carried away when doing advance while firing drills with my son and may have shot a few extra targets!

New gas block...
Image

Image

Slightly better than I thought at 0.7 ounces saved vs. the expected 0.5:
Image
Image

I will likely have to take this gas block off again though to shave a bit of material off the back side with a belt sander... I anticipated I'd have gas issues using a low profile block with standard non-free float hand guards, and unsurprisingly, I was having short stroke issues when I test fired it a few weeks ago.

When I took the steel block off tonight to swap in the titanium one, noted a carbon ring on the barrel forward of the gas port...only ~1/4 of the port on the gas block covered the barrel port. The 2A Arms has a slightly larger port and I really pushed down on the forward hand guard retention plate that the gas block (normally a FSB) holds in place to get the gas block back as far as possible...

If I'm still having issues when I take it out this weekend, I'll take some material off the back of the gas block to ensure proper alignment...basically make it function as a FSB.

I know some folks are wondering why I don't just use a free float hand guard or just use a FSB, but I was/am going for a very specific look and function for this build and some adjustments/modifications were expected.

Daughter loves it BTW!

The tax stamp cleared!

Post by 91Eunozs » Tue May 23, 2017 7:53 pm

Well, after nearly a year, the Bureau of Alchohol, Tobacco and Unicorns finally saw fit to clear the final piece for this build:

Image

Image

Still have to source a pink hard case and get the foam custom cut, and also need to get the adapter base Cerakoted pink. Gonna have 'em redo the optic mount too (my friend's paint job has a couple runs), and I'll mask off and paint the red dot myself while we're at it.

Nearly complete:
