Limiting your Cache to Three Calibers...

Post by searching4itnc » Tue Apr 10, 2012 1:56 am

Ammunition is getting so high, my friends and I are discussing limiting ourselves to just three (3) calibers to stockpile. Our thoughts are that not all of us have enough surplus 5.7 or .308 ammo laying around, but to choose a caliber easily stockpiled and traded if need be. Most of you would agree that while most AR's are in .223, the newer ones in 6.5 or so on are going to be difficult to find ammo for when the SHTF. So here are my three (3) choices:

(1) .223
(2) .40 S&W
(3) .22 Long Rifle

I'm not a shotgun fan, so I'm not gonna stockpile extra ammo for the one I've got. That's the only reason I'm not including it.

What are your thoughts?

Perfectly reasonable.

If you can get all you buds in on the same calibers then you can all bulk buy together and save even more.

I went a slightly different way.
My hand gun takes 4 calibers now with more coming eventually.
My rifle, three. Sort of.
My CCW two for now.

If I had to pick only three to stock
.22
12.ga
7.62x39

Why?

.22 - duh
12ga - versatility.
7.62x39 - the only centerfire rifle I own.

I think limiting to three really limits your capabilities.

My cache is only 3 calibers, and I would only add 12ga so I can shoot 3-gun with something.

In order of amounts on hand:
7.62x39mm
9x19mm
.22LR (I shoot a LOT of .22 and buy only 1 brick at a time unless there is a sale)

This is certainly a good time to focus on the basics.

I don't think that 7.62x39 limits you as a survival rifle, it's pretty close to .30-30 in performance.

I have a broader range, and would like to diversify, but keep my weapon type narrower.

I'm an AK/Glock guy, so getting more AK's and Glocks in varying calibers is what I'd like.

Not happening any time soon, but that's what I'd like...

From my perspective, all ammunition is finite, so I stay stocked on all calibers I own. I haven't really analyzed my stocking but I do seem to heavily favor buying shotgun ammo, but then again I use my shotguns more than any of my other firearms. My .22 only comes out during late squirrel season and my sks for plinking and such. I hunt everything from deer, rabbit, turkey, waterfoul and early squirrel with shotguns, to me they are hands down the best game getters so I keep a wide array of shot sizes and gauges stocked.

I've gone with 4, not 3... and am trying to promote as many prep-minded shooting buddies to buy/stock some or all of them.

.308 -kill anything
9mm -upper limit on pistol calibre diameter and cheaper than .357 sig or mag
12g -versatile
.22LR -super cheap

If I had to drop one of those, it would be 12gauge.

I couldn't do 3, the minimum I could ever do would probably be 5.

.22lr
9x19mm
.223
.308
12 gauge

I go kinda the opposite direction.
I go for versatility (my brother and brother in law both concentrate on a few calibers)
I collected firearms way before starting to prep and I have over 30 different calbers, so it sorta made sense to continue with the versatility.
gets really pricey 'tho'.

I have a few hundred rounds in calibers for which I don't have guns. I figure, if TSHTF that'd be the new dollar anyway, but better... because it actually has intrinsic value.

I'm with you on that one. I initially planed on sticking with .308 and .45, but then decided it might be good to have an alternate caliber for both rifles and handguns, as well as some shotgun ammo. Currently I have:

7.62 NATO/.308
5.56/.223
.45ACP
.40S&W
12 Guage

I have other calibers, but nothing that I plan to stockpile.

Limiting your Cache to Three Calibers...

Post by Winston Smith » Tue Apr 10, 2012 8:16 am

If only 3:
5.56(great shtf availability)

.45(9mm is cheaper and more available in shtf, But .45 has better stopping power and is still widely available. Tough choice)

12 ga. (stock oo buck, ooo buck, birdshot, and expanding slugs. Great versatility, if I had to go with 1 this is it)

And for a fourth

.22 (for small game, although I'm thinking you could do headshots with the 5.56 and still have the meat. It's just as easy to hit a squirrels head as the heart and lungs)

If you are planning on a shtf event lasting that long, how much food do you have? How are you going to make water potable or filter water? Do you have enough socks and a spare pair of footwear?

Here is a great idea: Have 5.7, 6.5G, 17HMR, and maybe a 16 gauge shotgun. This way no one would want to "borrow" your ammo supply. If you have just common calibers then you make yourself a great target for raiders.

Just a thought.

I can't do it. I can't get it down to just three calibers. I tried, but my head exploded.

If they're going to come for your supplies, I doubt they'll leave you alone when they realize you don't have a common caliber. At that point, they're likely to just steal your guns too.

I understand the desire to keep it simple, but I can't really simplify that far.

.22 for hunting
.380 for wife's handgun
9mm for my handgun
12 ga 00 buck for defense/larger game
7.62x39 for oh-shit time

I'm OK with that.

I stockpile a lot of 4 different calibers, and I think this is part of any sensible plan.
I think getting together with friends and standardizing and stockpiling is a great idea if you can all agree to it.

However, I have lots of firearms that I have accumulated over the ages and so I do keep on hand a useable amount for each.
The amount of ammo for each of these varies and I generally decide how much based upon the chances of me actually using it in an emergency, and how it will be used in an emergency.
I guess its all a stockpile, however, like anything else, you prioritize.
So in my stockpile I have an exponential amount for the firearms, I plan on using, compared to the others I don't plan on using much.
For example, while I have 100 rounds for the old 30-30. I have 1000+ rounds for my favorite handgun cartridge.

If I head to choose ONLY three calibers I would go with 9mm, .22 long and 5.56.

Stay safe.
