I actually worry about this. What if things drag on and on with the economy until a lot more prepared folk are forced to start parceling off their preparations just to put food on the table. A 'long burn out' is one my groups bigger concerns.

This is why cash money, savings, and redunant income are on my prep list way above new guns or a dedicated BOL.

Of course there's a difference between food on the table, and maintaining a lifestyle.

This is why robust food preps are a good decision. Not that I haven't had to sell a gun or two in the last few years, but when times get tough, we can not visit the grocery store or just get a few things and "save" a fortune. The last week we've been living off of freezer stuff and canned goods. No biggie, but if we had none of that, I'd have had to sell something.

ETA: always sorry to hear when you've gotta liquidate, I'm sure my solution wouldn't have helped that much, but I was making a point.

I think I would sell most of my furniture, one of my cars and 90% of the junk in my house before I would part with one of my firearms.

Sorry you are having a hard time. Have you looked into selling knicknack stuff on ebay? Or downgrading a few things?

I think that if this 'down turn' goes on much longer, we are going to have more 'mufti-generation' and 'shared' houses with multiple families, much like we had 50+ years ago.

I wont get into politics... but yea.

That sucks. Hope you can turn your situation around. Problem with selling things other than guns is that the market is extremely soft now for knicknacks and other "not so useful" stuff as everyone but the wealthiest have had to tighten their belts too...

I could conceivably sell off 3-4 of my guns and not impact my prep in any way.

Hopefully the OP can get back on his feet and get back into firearms soon.

Just sold all my guns

Postby L4tp » Fri Aug 03, 2012 1:29 pm

The bad part is selling them in tough economic times means you probably didn't get what you should have for them. That's probably the shittiest part. I have a boat I been trying to sell for two years but there is only so much of a screwing that I am willing to take.

Proof positive that the event that is taking this country down isn't a flip of a switch....it is a slow motion train wreck.

You are not alone.....I have taken a couple guns from friends on pawn.....They can have it back at the same $.

If you are using your preps to make it through tough times......then they are doing exactly what you have them for.

You aren't alone... I have purchased a couple of new guns from my nephew who is suffering the hit of the economy himself. I too suffer from it but I have made sacrifices in other areas to try and cushion the blow. I have had to take more jobs that are hard labor but because no one else wants to do them, I do. It is hard work and it is out in the 100+F heat every day. I had to sell some cattle and since the drought threatens my hay crop I had to tear down some things to scrap out and help pay for feed for the 16 head I have left.

Times are tough and it is a shame that you had to sell your guns to get by.

I hope things look up for you soon, and there is nothing wrong with having a shotgun and a hunting rifle if SHTF. It just means instead of running head long into a fire fight, you are going to have to hold back in the bushes and make more precision shots  And if you are a hunter... that shouldn't be a problem for you

I have re-directed my preps as well. Less guns, more ammo and food. I've sold a few guns this last year as well. Hopefully, things look up for you dude.

Sorry to hear this however, may I make a suggestion.
Forget the 40 hr work week. Think 60-70. Maybe more.
When I was in the military I worked a 50 hr week and had a 20 hr a week part time job.
The only way to get ahead is to work more. Grind the hours.
People will respect your commitment. It will be noticed.

People used to work all the time. The 40 hr work week is a new fiction, near as I can figure, it started in the 30-40's. Same with retirement. Never retire, even if it's just a part time job mopping floors. No shame, no surrender.

This is why I have cheap guns, very little could be gained by selling them, so it never comes up

This is an important thing to remember. After WWII, things weren't great, but eventually things stabilized into the Pax Americana that most of us grew up in. Before that, there was The Depression, and honestly, pretty hard times before that, too. 40-hour weeks is something that came about in the 50's, I think.

I've got some non-standard guns/support gear on the market right now because I'm having more trouble than I thought I would finding work. None of my standardized 'bare minimum' prep guns are expendable, though.

I feel you pain sir. I'll be selling (hopefully) an AK tomorrow. Next up will be a 1911 pistol, then an AR15. My wife graduated recentley with a BS in nursing. Her partnership was in a hospitol a little over 100 miles round trip. The price of gas strained the shit out of us. Our 2 kids are hitting growth spirts and are eating more than us. It will be about $500 for the paperwork/NCLEX exam. Gotta do what you have to do. Hopefully better times ahead for all.

@ one of none

What are you looking to get for your AK, what kind is it? pm me if you still have it for sale. I'm in the market for one, And I'd rather buy one from a ZS brother who needs the cash.

Thanks for the offer, appreciated. It was an ITM Arms MK99 AMD65 clone that I bought during the ban. No bayo lug, welded wire stock. This was my first private gun sale. I was asking $575 for it. Met up with him and he wanted to bring it to the gunshop that was right there for them to look at. He started haggling the price in the store and offered me $500. The guy behind the counter said he couldn't do that in the store. Gun shop guy said that for all he knew I was an ATF agent. A few seconds of silence and he said again that he would give me $500 for it. Gun shop guy says "You can't do that shit in the store, for all I know he's an ATF agent,OUT!" So I got $500 for it in the parking lot. Which turns out to be what I paid for it to begin with during the ban.
On a sidenote, I saw they were selling a new Kimber Ultra Carry II for $1000. The shop by me sells them for $1100. Next on the chopping block. Again, hopefully better times ahead for all.

Sorry OP for derailing your thread.

I feel this one as well. I sold everything but my prep/defensive firearms...because I needed to desperately downsize and raise some funds. Sucked, but I am.at confident in what I kept.
