Shoot me first vests

Postby Phoenix David » Mon Jun 25, 2012 7:10 pm

So what are peoples thoughts on the "shoot me first vests" SMFV? AKA the vest that hides your gun while you look like a photographer from the 1980's with no camera but everyone that shoots knows it's covering your gun vest?

I have been unable to find anything where a person wearing a SMFV was shot first, so just urban hype?

I conceal a G19 in shorts and a T-shirt.... No vest or cover shirt or Hawaiian shirt needed.

Enough said. I think they look too retarded to wear out in public. I wont even use them at IDPA anymore.

Never heard of it in the states. In Iraq we called the guys with vests, oakleys and MP5's that.

In my opinion they look ridiculous in almost any situation on almost any person. I'm like Crypto in that while they are almost ideal in a competition setting I won't even wear one for IDPA.

I wear one in my cab because I actually keep things in the pockets. Always have, even before I started carrying.

Yeah I don't wear them for IDPA either, and think they look goofy even with IDPA guys are wearing them. Even though lots of folks who tout IDPA always preach "it's so much more realistic". Um ok you using that everyday you carry?

When I go to an IDPA match I try to use clothes I normally use for concealed carry daily. Regular ol' T-shirts or a button up shirts here. No need for the hi-speed camera guy vest.

The only vests I ever wear are mandated safety vests when required by law or regulation (hunting, motorcycle riding etc).

News articles do not address what kind of clothing victims wear unless it is a hoody, body armor or uniform of some type. I would say that the chances of researching ti properly are low.

God, you guys make it sound so bad I'm going to have to stop wearing mine fishing :gonk:

I remembered how much I wanted one when I was 10 and how proud I was when I got it when I was 11, and how cool I thought it was, and how I'd pretend to be a special forces guy in it with my stick-rifle...

hey man, when it comes to fly fishing those vests are awesome. And anyways, who would expect the guy with waders and a rod to be packin under his vest?
though you could probably conceal an AR-15, a shotgun, two machetes and twenty mags in the waders alone...

A fishing vest looks appropriate when you are wearing waders and carrying a fly rod. They don't really blend in when you're wearing jeans or shorts at the local steak house.

Like I've told my daughter- any old white dude in a photographers vest or wearing a fanny pack is carrying a gun. They all think they are super stealthy, but it's an easy make if you are looking for it.

An alternative is to class it up a little. How about a vest from 3-peice suit? Lose the jacket and you've still got a fair bit of covering without looking like you're from the 80's in your photographers vest or billowy Hawaiian shirt.

It just depends on how low profile you want to be (vests aren't very) or how fashionable you want to look (again, vests aren't very.)

I like pockets, I carry all kinds of stuff that has nothing to do with guns or ccw, so I sacrifice a bit of fashion/low profile for luggage space. I wear safari shirts with a bunch of pockets, not quite as bad as the fishing vest but definitely out of place if you aren't looking for David Livingstone.

I think they look awful and make you stand out, but only as a dork who can't dress himself. The people you need to worry about aren't thinking "ZOMG THAT DUDE HAS A GUN". They're thinking "Haha look at that stupid asshole in that retarded looking vest!"

Anyone who makes you as carrying because of that vest likely carries themselves.

Interesting question: how hip are the "bad guys" - the predators, and especially the people who carry illegally w/intent to commit violent crimes - how hip are they to the vagaries and conventions of licensed carry?

I know a lot of street fashion grew up around the need to conceal - or the need to look to others as though you might be concealing, as protective camouflage. But there are differences in preferred modes of carry (usu. strong side appendix holsterless) and cover garment between the typical licensee and the typical unlawful carrier. As CCW gets more popular, will the differences become less distinct?

But what if you're wearing jeans-shorts at the local steak house? Do the fanny pack and fishing vest blend in then?

Raises an interesting question. What's a good way to go for CCW without standing out as either someone carrying or looking like your mom can't dress you that's mid-way between the suit vest and an IWB holster and a long t-shirt. Anything out there that's urban/suburban and summer enough to work in that fashion middle ground without standing out as the guy in long-sleeve flannel in August? It seems to me most options I've heard for CCW either fit into the "I have a decent build that hides it when I'm wearing a long t-shirt" or something that screams out obvious to those who know what they're looking at because it's fashionably awkward in some way or another.

Where I live, wearing at least a light jacket is commonplace about 9-10mo out of the year. Make sure it's either from REI or Carhartt and you blend right in. As a result, OWB or even a Drop-offset holster is fairly concealable.

Any man wearing a fanny pack is assumed carrying a gun. I think that is why they went back out of fashion.

The vest is pretty lame... Tho I too wanted one for fishing when I was a kid...Thought they were the most awesome piece of gear. :ohdear:

But yea I think the only people that have any idea that a person wearing a vest is pack are those of us that are also packing.. To anyone else It's just an old guy that might REALLY like fishing...Especially when paired with a fishing boonie hat(with fly hooks)
