This is a pretty good perspective of a firefight. Yes it is a saw gunners view but take note how fast he runs through ammo and the others are going through magazines before everyone is down to their last. Even on semi auto you can burn through rounds quickly. This is why I feel lots of ammo and good optics is an absolute must.

Exactly Kutter, plus in survival mode the plan should be protect yourself but try to avoid engagements if possible when ammo is limited.

I wholeheartedly agree. My wife and kids are pretty screwwed if I get hit, regardless of "winning" the fight, or the general state of our group. Injuries are bad, GSW's can be a team killer.

I recently shot a box of .22lr ammo that was made prior to WWII. All of it shot and functioned just fine. As long as the stuff is stored properly, it doesn't seem to ever go bad.

With that in mind, one could conceivably buy a lifetime supply in one transaction, and then never have to worry about buying ammo again.

I'm not at that point yet, but an ultimate goal of mine is to have enough stored that I never again have to worry about fluctuating ammunition prices or availability. The recent shortage taught me that, it doesn't take much for certain calibers to become difficult to find regardless of price.

Ship it to a commercial address. If you're friends with the owner, they'll hold it at the dock and you can make the 12 trips back and forth to get it home.

Done it a few times, but never for ammo.

I hear people say to me a lot, "but you can't carry it all." And that's my point. When the fight becomes one in which I have depleted my ammo stores, then I can take what's left and beat feet out of town. I am bugging in, not out. If NYC goes radioactive, I'm toast unless I bug out by water, which means I get to the boat, load it up and head on out. The 3 boats available to me can all carry the ammo I'd want to bring with.

But to answer your question - as much as you can afford. Who's to say the next election doesn't completely deplete the ammo available now? Remember 2008? I am personally not shooting any more of my rifle caliber ammo until after the results of the election, since it may have an impact on guns and ammo going forward. But I do plan on buying as much as I can afford in anticipation of either A) lots of shooting in 2013 if ammo prices don't spike or B) Selling at a premium it to people that didn't stock up.

My inventory spreadsheet says I have 2200 rounds of .22 so I'm slightly short of my goal. Went shooting over (kids) spring break and went through 500 rounds.

Same here. It's great ammo but it disappeared about a year or two ago. I've got around 600 rounds of it stashed away in my ammo cabinet "for a rainy day."

Lucky find. I managed to scoop up some Canadian milsurp at a local gun show a few weeks ago. They had 200 rds and I bought it all - $10 per box or 5 boxes for $40.

I’ll add up front that you really can’t have enough unless you run out of storage space. Realistically, I aim for about 1000 rounds per main rifle and about 500 rounds per pistol.

My reasoning is that you need your “combat load” ready to go which (depending on caliber and rifle type) should be around 300 rounds. Add a resupply of 600 (just double my ready combat load) and that leaves about 100 rounds to maintain your zero. This doesn’t include practice and training ammo…I try to keep a few hundred on hand and loaded up for training opportunities and will purchase ammo in bulk when I find a deal to sustain.

Pistols are the same as a rifle, just don’t need as much ammo for operational use, but it doesn’t hurt to work up to a case per pistol/revolver.

Both add up when you have a half dozen .308 rifles, half-dozen 7.62x39 and a dozen AR rifles. You know you have enough or too much when you have to move (which I’ve done a few times); hauling that much ammo around is a major PITA!

Shotgun ammo is spread over a wide variety, but I’ll buy a couple hundred OO buck when I find a good deal; that’s probably the majority of my shotgun ammo with a few hundred in various shot sizes for hunting. The .22LR is always good to have and I really don’t keep count anymore; I just a buy a few 1000 rounds every once in a while and stack it deep. I’ll buy from the local stores for my range fun.
