By "qualified" the USMC apparently taught me tactics that should have been updated some 15 years prior. Marksmanship, fundamentals thankfully remain the same:

M16A2
M9 (taught cup and saucer grip  )
M249 SAW
TOW missile (computerized, and several training shots)
M2 .50
Mk19
Grenade
M203
AT4
M240
M1a1 DMR rifle
Bennelli M4, almost forgot that one. Loved that shotgun course.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Crosstrained 0352 and 0331 from a CAAT plt.

Oddly enough 'qualifying' with a weapon (at least based on my USMC experience) has essentially no bearing on whether or not I was actually taught anything that would appoximate usage in real world conditions.

I equate being 'qualified' with a weapon as the ability to truly and effectively employ it (i.e., hit what your shooting at, perform rapid reloads and malfunction drills, and thoroughly troubleshoot and maintain it). By the end of my contract I actually felt I had acquired some skill with an M249 and would have considered myself 'qualified' with it (probably could still get the job done after a brief refresher on it, I carried the damn thing for what seemed like forever). I could also accurately shoot an M16A2, as well as mostly hit a target with an M203 lauched grenade (after expending a few to get the range down), but oddly enough I didn't know how much I didn't know about employing an M16/M4 or a pistol until I recieved civilian training at Milcopp X 2 as well as a few other civilian classes.

So, my take away from my USMC experience is that fam-firing a bunch of neat shit at SOI (.50 cal, M240G, MK-19, etc.) or firing the occasional AT-4 or throwing a grenade a few time doesn't = qualified, at least IMHO. I was never combat deployed, though. I imagine you bring yourself up to speed most ricky-tick on such things when somebody else is shooting back at you.

I suppose now I consider myself 'qualified' with an M4 or variant and any type of Glock pistol. That's pretty much it.

Watson: "Yes, I thought it as well to take them."
Holmes: "Most certainly! Keep your revolver near you night and day, and never relax your precautions..."

Depends on your MOS and unit, really.

I was an 0331 so I qualified on all of the machinegun systems, and was technically proficient with them. However, I was with a line company and didn't often get a chance at firing a M2 or Mk19 in the field or while deployed. I could, however, rock-n-roll on bipod or tripod/T&E with a 240, and direct the deployment of them as a section, squad, and team leader. Alternatively, I'd actually consider myself less tactically proficient with a basic AR than a rifleman, at least by today's standards of training.

Well I shot my CZ PCR for the Armed Security Qualification class.

But because of how the DCJS in Virginia works I am considered qualified with a 9mm handgun. So passing with my DA/SA decocker CZ, means I'm Qualified with all 9mm pistols no matter what style they are.

If things work out and I'm off work when they hold the class I'm doing the shotgun qualification next month, but then that Qualification course requires you to bring 5 rounds of 00 buck for the test, and that qualifies you with almost any 12 ga shotgun. :gonk:

Really not sure either of those counts by this definition:
DannusMaximus wrote:I equate being 'qualified' with a weapon as the ability to truly and effectively employ it.
That said I've taken several classes with the PCR and I'm comfortable with my abilities to use it effectively to defend myself.

I was in the AirForce.

We were not allowed to touch firearms. And after watching a few of them try to qualify I could understand.

But I did qualify with the the M16A1(yep we had them), M16A2, 1911 and SW.38.

For my CCW we don't actually qualify with or for any specific pistol. Used a 9mm though.

Never had the time or cash at the same time to take any other official weapons course.

We lowly Air Force electron pushers don't get to play with the cool stuff...so sadly all I have every qualified on is the M-16A2.

Man, I thought I was doing pretty well until I saw some of these lists. Fired a bunch of stuff but only formally qual'd on:

M16A2
M4
GAU5/GUU5P (both versions)
M9

...and the .38 special (can't recall the designation) back in the early '90s before AF aircrew also switched to the M9. I do feel somewhat vindicated that I've shot expert on all of 'em and have qualed on NVGs on all but the .38 as well.

Had the opportunity in Nov '08 to shoot the Barrett .50 in AFG w/some Norwegian SF dudes I worked with, as well as their vehicle-mounted full auto 40mm grenade launcher (shot an entire case myself!) and whatever they called their recoiless rifle/RPG. I'll have to look that up.

They were about to redeploy and had to get rid of their excess ammo... I also requaled on my M9 and M4 while we were out at the range outside Bagram.

Crazy to see locals out running around on a live range retrieving brass from the helo gunships doing their runs a couple klicks off to the side of us. I remember seeing vehicles driving UNDER the target we were shooting w/the Barrett and my instructor casually saying "yeah, don't hit the locals..."

While I wouldn't even qual to apply to any kind of sniper school I was lucky/well-coached/well-spotted enough to hit 4 out of the 5 rounds I was allowed on the Barret on a man-size target at just over 2K meters...round #5 (my 3rd shot) hit about a meter high/right. The team's actual spotter/sniper team had everything zeroed and all I had to do was line everything up and pull the trigger...a lot harder than it looks! I can hold my own out to ~ 300 meters or so but man, shooting well consistently at those kind of ranges is beyond my skill set.

I'm just happy I didn't do what the Polish Col who shot prior to me did...he put his face too close to the scope and now has a nice circle-shaped scar just over his right eye!
