Ok... I went to a family gathering for my Grandmothers birthday and twin cousins graduation. All the family was there for the BBQ up in the hills and my nephews brought their firearms to play with since I let them play with mine on mothers day when they came to my house. They thought I would like trying out some of their guns.

When my nephew Dan brought out the Taurus Judge I was a little sceptical but also intreagued and when I got my turn to try it out I just couldn't put it down. My mother even fell in love with it because she is afraid that with the way the world is going (with all the recent breakins and bath salt scares lol) she would like a gun that she herself could handle and protect herself with should anyone break into our ranch home. She wanted a shotgun but since she has NO expirience with guns at all my step father and I were not sure how to get her a shotgun she could keep near her bed and be able to handle it without someone taking it away from her before she could get a shot off. This gun solves that problem. She can keep it in her bedside table drawer and no one would know it was there, and it wouldn't be awkward to handle or heavy ended and even though someone could still disarm my mother holding this gun it would be a little more difficult than reaching out grabbing the barrel and yanking it out of her hand like it would be with a full on shotgun.

It is a .45/410.

My mother wants one and so do I.

And what is wrong with the judge spd164?

My mother has NO PREVIOUS EXPIRIENCE with ANY guns of ANY kind and she handled my nephews Judge well and could actually hit a targe... with the 410 shells of course.

Why wouldn't it be a good starter gun for her? She is 74 years old! I can't see her with a full size shotgun!

For myself I just liked it because I can't miss and if I am actually going to have to EVER pull a gun on someone (God Forbid) for breaking into my home or threatening my safety then I am not giong to be pulling a gun for show! My father always told me that if I pull a gun on someone I better be prepared to use it and if I am not, then don't be pulling a gun! Which I am a firm believer in and have never had to pull a gun on somene before and hope that I never have to (I have however been shot myself) but things are getting worse and worse in the area where I live. People are breaking into homes left and right and they are even going to far as to strip copper electical wiring from unfinished buildings and even finished buildings. It's out of control. So if I am going to have to pull a gun on someone to protect myself, my family or my property I am not going to be pulling it for show and tell. I am going to use the thing and with the Judge .45/410 I won't be missing, and I don't intend on missing if things are actually that bad that I would be forced to pull a gun on anyone. (once again I would like to stress that I really would rather not ever have to do such a thing and I hope that it is my luck that I can live my entire life and never have to.)

Don't get all butt hurt bro. I'm not derailing the fun "lusting" thread with a long drawn out discussion about the pro's and con's of the Judge. If you want the answers to your "what's wrong with it" question, there's plenty of threads regarding the judge on this and other gun forums. Do some research before you buy, but for the love of god please don't subscribe to the notion that because you are shooting a .410 shot shell you "can't miss". Seriously broseph, do yourself and your mom a favor and put in some time researching your decision before making a purchase.

You are correct. I really should do some more research before committing to any firearm for myself or for my mother.
The few people I have talked to so far have had nothing but good things to say about the judge but that is only about 6 people total, not enough to get a whole consensus.
And Im not all butt hurt I just wanted to hear your opionion on why the judge wouldn't be suitable for me or my mother.
I will admit that shooting it was fun and i had a blast with it when my nephew brought it to the family gathering but it doesn't make it a viable firearm to have, it just means its fun LOL. But then again... I am a freak, I like guns period. Anything that goes bang is fun for me, especially when I hit something LOL (targets, milk jugs, bottles full of colored water, soda bottles, pigeons)

Anyway... back OT

There is one more firearm I am after at this time. The Smith & Wesson M&P ---- BUT ---- I would want a trigger job done on it to make it smooth like butter and I custom paint job done. A smokey paint job, something abstract, but not over the top abstract... does that make sense?

Planning on building my first AR when I get home in a couple of months. I have a few military grade 14.5" barrels that need pinned/welded flash hiders before I get started. I'm going to be supporting my local economy by doing most of my shopping at Rainier Arms. Here's what I have planned for the first one:

Rainier Arms XD Flash Hider
Image

Rainier Arms Upper/Lower Combo
Image

And a Centurion Carbine Cutout Rail
Image

I had a whole list for all the guts and add ons, but it's long and they all pretty much look the same, so no photos necessary.

The second one (next year's) will be more of a Magpul MOE type build with FDE furniture and I may even start screwing around with Duracoat. I haven't made up my mind yet.

The final build will be very basic, ideally with an A2 fixed carry handle upper and plastic handguards. Cheap, no add ons, just a nekkid rifle. :D

A Ruger Mk3 with Quik shock 22 LR for tookies grandma.
Normally I don't advocate 22LR however sine the use/ manipulation of any other gun maybe too difficult I make exceptions for the elderly. And some of the elderly while not physically able have their wits about them, have a calm anger and will put the rd where it needs to go. 22 beats a purse over the head.

Hmmmm... I don't know. She is kind of prone to panic attacks and she knows it too, that is why she asked for a shotgun. She herself doesn't think she would be able to be on target with a shot if she should have to make one. When she first breached the subject about getting her some self and home protection I was going to give her my old pump action .22 LR but she quickly dismissed it, as did her husband. Then when I offered her a smaller 380 handgun she dismissed that too because she said she would never be able to hit anything with that except her walls and windows. She insists on a shotgun. When she tried out The Judge she actually did well with it and wasn't freaked out by the recoil so that is why she and I thought perhaps it would be a good idea for her... but I will revisit the subject of the .22 with her and perhaps get her to come out to my range with me and train her a little with one and see how she feels about it after she gets a little practice with it.

Thanks for the help on the matter Regular Guy

Well, I'm thinking Ruger youth model 10/22 with 16" and some BX-25 mags. My son is 10 and he can rock it like no ones business. I really think a shotgun is bad news due to limited capacity/stopping power*, and the manual strength necessary to operate a pump action. I think a 10/22 with a mag full of Quik Shock and a $80 red dot would serve her very well. We hit a block of gel with some 22 LR HP. The result was a full expanded slug with about 20" of penetration. Then I let my son go to town on it. At the end of 25 rds, it was mush.
I can envision granny with a mag full of 22 LR putting some serious hurt on an intruder.

As always, alarms and motion lights are a must. Both are very cheap now.

I'm thinking .410 because 12 ga is just too much for the elderly.

Tookie,.. if you have to go with a judge, look at the carbine for your mom. My dad got one for a "by the door" gun. Initially, I was skeptical, but it's turned out to be a neat little shooter. I put a little bushnell red dot sight and mom is rockin' it. She pops crows around the garden with the shot shell and has gotten a couple of snakes, too. Not to mention, off the shelf 45lc as very damn little recoil in the carbine. The shot shell definitely kicks more.

I don't like the Judge revolver, but the little carbine is fricken teats! It makes a great garden/backpack gun.

Now, if I could only shoot 454s in it and it had 8 round on tap. then I'd grab one for myself.

Shot one last weekend. Definitely the compact 9 to have. I've shot more that a few.

Just my quick two cents here. Your grandmother might be over-estimating the mythology of the "cone of death"/"can't miss" of a shotgun. Granted, you've got a little more variation in point of aim to still get some sort of hit on the target (and no one likes to have holes of any size/number in them) but I certainly wouldn't dismiss other weapons just on a potentially mistaken belief that you'll always miss with them but always hit with a shotgun; especially in the close quarters of a home.

However, I do agree that a long gun is probably not the best home defense weapon for grandma due to size/weight/recoil/confined areas. Might be a good excuse for a family shoot to set up a bunch of targets at about 5 to 10 yards and let grandma blast away with a few different firearms owned by various members of the family if you have that option.

To be more on topic, I don't have a picture at the moment, but I've been waiting for my local gun store to get the Ruger SR9c back in stock for some time now and I've been told they're expecting them today. Eagerly awaiting a phone call this afternoon and the end of the work day to, hopefully, go shopping. The Shield looks good, but I like the hand feel and the trigger on the Rugers better than the M&P line.

After ZCON range day, I'm lusting after a Saiga 12.

Also, I want to build a "ringer" that totally breaks the spirit of the slow-fire pistol competition rules, but is technically a pistol:

Of course, I should probably slip a silicone dildo over the barrel, since this kind of poor sportsmanship would make be a huge dick. Kind of want to anyway.

A decent, but budget minded red dot sight. Thinking either a Primary, Vortex, or a Bushnell.
An Ironwood buttstock for my AK.
An ARES, or VTAC to accompany said AK.
Umm... new set of CR123 lithiums for my G2?

Been missing my .243. So I'd love to have another Savage 11 in that chambering. Or the new Ruger American is kinda appealing. Would also love to have a S&W 29 in a 8" bbl .
