SHOT Show 2011

Postby bigfrank87 » Wed Dec 22, 2010 3:30 pm

SHOT Show 2011 is 26 days away as of writing this. Any other ZS members going to be attending? I received my attendee info yesterday, and have also started to check out the iPhone app they released for the show. Its pretty sweet, GPS based location with the flood plan, detailed lists of vendors I want to check out and schedule for all the events going on during the show week.

This is my first SHOT Show and my first Vegas trip..so needless to say I am excited. Another bonus I just read about is Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey will be the guest appearance at the SOG Knifes booth so will be cool to meet him if the line doesn't get to out of control.

Anyone attending; what company booths are you most excited about checking out? I am already having an overload of awesome companies I want to check out..so I doubt I could narrow it down to just one.

Will be attending via youtube just so long as someone uploads them like they have in years past. No it isn't the same, and I know I wont get to see everything but at least I get to see something.

I will have my FlipHD and my iphone4..so pending on what the rules are for video and phot.. or live video streaming for that matter- I hope to do some video or photo updates when possible during the event.

Anyone go in the past that could confirm or not if this would be a bad idea?

Zoltan is going and working a booth, I just can't rememeber which one. PM him for the details since he hasn't posted here yet and prolly hasn't seen the thread.

I'd love to go, but the money is better spent flying back to AZ to see family.

I was supposed to go actually, just had some financial issues deny me that. :(

SHOT Show 2011

Postby bigfrank87 » Fri Dec 24, 2010 8:19 pm

Wildeman : thanks for the info I'll check that out and see what's up.

For the rest of you guys; any requests for specific vendors/photos/whatever? I hope to be able to do at least a nightly write up and photo post. Maybe some videos too pending on how much video I actually take.
Also more then likely my list of vendors to visit will be the same as most of the user base here so I hope I can spread some of the SHOT show goodness to the guys not attending.

Only thing I don't know for sure is the policy for photo taking and/or live upload/writing about the gear being photographed. I assume it's lax but I'll confirm before hand. Anyone know for sure?

Have a good holiday everyone

No photos/video unless you have a media badge. Strictly enforced too.

If you don't have one, and someone notifies security they will ask you to leave from what I was told. I already paid for my badges, but I'm trying to get media badges now.

SHOT Show 2011

Postby bigfrank87 » Fri Dec 24, 2010 9:03 pm

Facejackets; thanks for the confirmation. I kind of figured they had some sort of rules regarding photos since they are showing brand new stuff not for sale yet.

What do you do that gets you eligible for a media pass? I just read the site and I'm listed as "sales" and they won't be issued a media pass. So looks like I won't be taking pictures. I dis want a photo with the Gunny but oh well

Thanks for the heads up

They will let you take a picture with Gunny! They just won't let you walk around snapping pics of all the new toys coming out.

My buddy has a blog and he was able to use that to get his media badge. Also, when I was a moderator on another forum, all the mods and admins got into the show with Media badges because they ran a website for firearms. Its not hard at all.

What do you do to be listed as "sales"

Well my email and iPhone app once logge in says I am Sales and the shop and the other part is:

Type of Registration:
BUYER CLASSIFICATION

I will be working part time in a local shop. I had to say "will be" cause the state has been dragging their feet on my FFL employee paperwork (maybe not state but who ever those forms were sent to)

Luckily I was able to get my SHOT stuff ready without that paperwork being back.

Thanks for the media info.. I'll make a call because I think the shop site might have a blog and if that's the case maybe that's enough to get a media badge.

I know the SHOT people actually check the site out too so you have to make sure its legit. Even if you can't run around taking pics of everything there is a shit ton of freebies and catalogs you can take.

Also, the SHOT registration has no idea if you work at the store or not yet, but as long as the store lists you as an employee who can attend, you can register. Hell, if your grandma was listed as an employee she could go

Yea I doubt they have a blog up and running for the shop. I'll just avoid the hassle of changing my pass and just check out the show with out the photos.

I'm hoping that when the holidays are over my paperwork for working goes thru, but I'm good to go for the show so good enough for me.

Thanks again everyone for the info.

No problem dude. Since this is your first, I highly reccomend buying new padded socks, and new padded sole insets. Wear running shoes, not boots or dress shoes.

What hotel are you staying at?

Thanks for that intel- I was wondering about that type of stuff. I just snagged some Dr Scholls "Gel'n" things whatever they r called they made my boots a lot more confortable.

Im staying at Treasure Island. What's the "happening" hotel as far as where people attending shot show tend to stay.

I know so far I have some dinner meeting type things scheduled; but I figure I'll be out doing the social thing at night time.

Hey since you mentioned you have a media pass.. Does that mean your attending the media day at the range? Looks bad ass from the footage I have seen from past years. I would love to go to that- but lack of media badge aside I'm not in town till the next morning.

I didn't score a media pass this year. I got de-modded on that site awhile ago. But I am going with the same pass you are. So no range day for me.

T.I. is a pretty "happening" place these days. Encore, The Wynn, Palazzo, Caesars Palace, they are all pretty busy. The Cosmopolitan just opened, and the whole City Center property is pretty popular. Can't forget about Planet Hollywood.

I work on The Strip all night, and hate the "nightlife scene". I get to deal with the people after they have already been kicked out of three places, or covered in puke. Its not fun, so I stay away. I'm almost 24 and have yet to step foot into a club of any sort.

TI is pretty damn close to the show so at least you'll save money by walking.

Haha I feel you on dealing with drunks. Im not a club person myself.. And stopped drinking after my 21st bday (turning 24 in feb.) so I guess I might hit the tables or something at night.

As far as treasure island being close- I have been doing some google earth scouting (and street view.. What can I say I'm a nerd and I like to have a solid layout going before arriving to a new area)

Seems to me I can walk in a few minutes to the show- or even faster if I can cut thru whatever is the hotel between T.I. And the sands Expo center.

Last dumb question : I have heard from some folks who have done this show in the past say you can buy stuff on the last day from some vendors. Are the deals any good then? Or is it more of a chance to buy new stuff but still at MSRB? Thanks again for all the input

MSRP is what manufacturers believe thier product is worth, not what they sell it at.

Basically you'll get a lot of "dealer pricing" lists. Some of which will make you VERY happy. Some companies will sell you items from the floor or something out of a box in "the back", but its not like a giant swap meet. I am going to try to bring some cash with me this year, but I'm not sure how that'll work out, or if its even worth it.

Another thing is, do NOT eat at the show. Its four days long, and that gives you plenty of time to leave for an hour or two each day to go find somewhere else to eat. the show is RIDICULOUSLY expensive for crappy food. Go find a Subway, and for $5 you can eat lunch every day, or pay the $7.50 for a cold, hard pretzel, and $3.50 for a 16oz Powerade.

I'll be there to review new survival gear as part of my job as staff writer for Doug Ritter and his Equipped to Survive Foundation. This will be my first time at SHOT show or Vegas for that matter. :D Hopefully I can meet up with some/all y'all.

Dealer price sounds cool haha. I have seen what some products get marked up from so any deal at the show would be cool. I'll have cash just incase something pops up. Honestly not to much I Need but i could use a decent rifle light and offset mount. Haven't checked out that many in person so even if I don't buy at the show I'll know what feels best for me.. And who knows what new stuff will eventually lead to my wallet being lighter. So I guess it's a win win.. Win haha.

Blast: where are you staying? I'm staying at treasure island. I'll check out that blog, SHOT show is prolly a pretty sweet gig for a writer into this type of stuff

Bigfrank87, I'll be staying at Circus Circus (can't beat $36 a night  ). Equipped to Survive Foundation's website is www.equipped.org, they do a lot of reviews of maritime, airline, trucking, and civilian safety gear. They have a preparedness forum where I'm a moderator and will be posting my reviews. The founder, Doug Ritter, is also the head guy for www.kniferights.org, which is kind of the NRA of the knife world.
