How is that Canadian style?

I guess you must plan to make the lower of forged bacon with a maple syrup finish.

Nice looking so far however.

My understanding of Canadian laws is that the magazines themselves are not restricted in any way, but ownership of a firearm that can accept magazines with over 5 rounds capacity is restricted more tightly than ownership of firearms that cannot. (Assuming the firearms in question are semi-automatic.) The Garand is excepted from this. So, a Garand, or any bolt action, or an SKS with a pinned 5-round fixed mag, would all be treated like a sporting gun, and subject to less severe restrictions on what you can do with it, while a semi-auto rifle that can accept hi-cap mags is restricted more severely, like a handgun. More hoops to jump through to get it, can't shoot it in your backyard, can only drive it to and from the range, and God help you if you have to stop for gas. That kind of thing.

But the mags themselves, you can buy with no problem. It's the gun that is regulated, not the mag.

Canadians, please let me know if I have any of this wrong.

The AR15 was granted a sporting exemption due to it's widespread use as a competition rifle. Still have to have a PAL, pass the restricted firearms tests and other such craziness, and must posses an ATR from the mounties Chief firearms officer to take it to the range. AFAIK the 5 round limit still applies.

All mags made for the AR15 need to be pinned to 5

I have 3 mags that are for an 223 pistol, which can hold 10 rounds. LAT15 I think it is.

Don't tell me our laws don't make sense, I already know it ;)
So my 20 rounder is pinned to 5.

Not exactly. Magazines made to be used in centerfire semi-auto firearems (rifles and shotguns) must be limited to hold no more than 5 cartridges (10 for handguns). Semi-auto magazines that hold more than 5 rounds themselves are prohibited devices even if you don't own a firearm that can accept it. There is no license available to allow you to have a semi-auto firearm that can accept magazines greater than 5 rounds. There is, however, a quirk in the law that allows you to legally use 10 rounds magazines in certain semi-auto firearms. The law regulates magazines based on what they are made for, not what they will fit into. So, if you have a magazines built for (and marked as such) the LAR-15 (classified as a pistol and therefore allowed 10 rounds), you can legally use it in your AR-15. An identical magazine except marked for the AR-15 that holds 10 rounds would be a prohibited device. The same goes for the Beretta CX4. It accepts Beretta M92 magazines which can be hold 10 rounds withing the law, however, magazines marked as being made for the CX, must hold only 5.

What you're talking about is restricted firearms. We have three classes of firearms: Non-restricted (most rifles and shotguns), restricted (handguns, some rifles and shotguns), and prohibited (some handguns, some rifles, some shotguns, including all full autos). To own and possess a non-restricted firearm, you need a PAL (Posession and Acquisition License). This allows you to buy ammo and to posessand use non-restricted firearms whereever it is safe to do so. To posess a restricted firearm, you need an RPAL (Restriced Posession and Acquisition License). This allows you to own and posess the firearm, however restricted firearms cannot be transpoted without an ATT (Authorization to transport) which is normally issued through your gun club. It's good for several years and allows you to transport the firearm to and from your gun club. You cannot take the firearm anywhere else without a Special ATT issued by the provincial firearms officer and you cannot hunt or discharge a restricted firearm outside of a range. People who own firearms that later became prohibited were allowed to keep their firearms and they were licensed to own and posess those prohibited firearms. Prohibited firearms face the same restrictions as restricted except tha they will not issue an ATT to take it to the range - they are safe queens only.

I hope that explains it!

Love it.

I think you can run 8 round mags for the Garand in Canada. Not sure why that is. And with the Benelli MR1 you can use the River Rock Arms LAR-15 pistol magazines maxed at 10 rounds, like the CX4. At least you can for now...

That is correct. The Garand was specifically exempted from the 5 round rule. You can actually use those LAR mags in any AR. A lot of people do. They sell for around $30 or more a piece for that very reason.

Ah but the AR is restricted and so can only be used at and transported to the range. The MR1 has a non-restricted version. Other than the CX4, I don't know of any other rifles that can run more than the 5 round magazines (apart from said Garand).

Possibly the Norinco M14. I'm told (but have not been able to verify) that the 10 rd AIA mags made for their Enfield Rifles work just fine in an M14.....the problem is that nobody seems to be selling AIA Mags!
