I gotta I love the Mauser style action, and right handed is all I've ever tried. I've seen pics of wrong-handed guns but never gotten to work one :(

My brother has a Remington 700CDL in left hand. It even shoulders nicely for me right handed, although working the bolt is an ass with how far back he has mounted the scope. :)

As for right-handed bolties, the only one he has tried and liked has been the Lee-Enfield series. Go figure.

The position of the trigger safety is enough to drive me mad though.

If you are interested in rifles; The H&K SL8 has ambi controls and the ejectionport is so no problem either. 8)

Pistols: Tanfoglio P19's (Known under the name Witness in the US) can switch side on the magcatch and can have a ambi safety.
All H&K USP's can be arranged to be ambi. Most of the more recent pistolmodels from H&K too.

What no mention of the AK47? Most lefty friendly rifle out there!

On handguns, I like Glocks and 1911's. All the 1911 needs is an ambi-safety.

Hell yeah! First post...

:D I love my AK, Ambi mag release, safety is easier for a lefty, bolt is easier for a lefty, and I can see into the chamber fairly easily. :D

If you look closely at the model above, you will see that the trigger is in front of the action. This means that the action is further back, about even with your face. The ejection port is on the right side. Now for a right-handed person this is no problem because their face is on the left side of the rifle. But a lefty will be putting their face on the other side of the rifle, and would catch the hot brass with their: teeth/cheek/eyes, not to mention the hot gases.

All in all, it's not impossible for a lefty to use a right handed bull-pup. However I would not recommend it, and you would likely end up with a small scar to remember it by.

Plenty of folks have mentioned lefty ARs, but not as many people know that AK's can be easily converted to left-bolt. Left-hand bolt carriers are fairly common, and you can either chop/have chopped your dustcover or buy a specialty lefty dustcover. Most AK's eject right, but fairly far forward and AWAY from a lefty's face!

I have seen a "mirror" or "wrong way" AK that was custom built for a friend of mine. It was a little spendy (custom milled receiver, custom made "mirror" selector, etc) but very, very cool.

edit: http://www.coloradoshootingsports.com/AKIntro.html This is just one of the commercial offerings and one of the few I've seen in person. Pretty decent unit. Comes with the bolt carrier and dustcover. $225, but not bad considering.

Honestly, I feel that the AK is already optimized for a lefty:
While holding the pistol grip with my left hand, I can chamber a round with my right, peer into the breech, change the mag, and switch the selector, all without sacrificing my firing grip, or even moving much at all, comparatively.

Watch the video closely, you can see that even though this guy is clearly well practiced and smooth, the action of operating the bolt is rather awkward. Now look at those pics again, the bolt is easier for a left-handed person.

Notice with the Lightning bolt, everyone using it in their pics is right-handed.

YMMV.

Been thinking of the SIG 556 SWAT lately, how does it handle left handed since I am southpaw myself. Anybody here have hands-on experience?

I'm ambi, and I have no problems shooting my Sig 556 lefty. My lefty amigo had no problems either. It seems to blow much less gas in your face than an AR at the expense of a bit more weight towards the front of the rifle.

Oddly enough, and leaving aside the reasons why this is a backup backup rifle, the Henry US Survival rifle has shooting position that is more comfortable for a left shoulder shooter. This is because the barrel is off-center on the stock (I think it has to be for the stowing it *in* the stock feature) and is just physically easier to put your left eye in line with the sights. The magazine release is at the front of the trigger guard, so that's sort of ambi, and although the safety is on the right side, the way the rifle is built you sort of pistol grip it anyway, it's not very comfortable to put your right hand on the barrel forward of the action

I'm also cross-dominant, but I started long guns with an O/U shotgun on my right shoulder and both eyes open - it worked, I don't know how, it just worked. The blade sight on the rifle (is that the right thing to call it? sorry if I mislabelled it) is a new thing for me, and I'm trying to teach myself to use it on my left shoulder. The cross dominance threads rattling around here have helped me on that, thanks guys. [/derail]

Don't forget the Browning semi-auto 22 (bottom ejecting, only rifle with top feed.)

I feel like I read/heard somewhere that the FN-P/FN-X series of pistols have reversible controls...though I've never owned one and don't know for sure.

The SCAR is pretty left friendly. Ambi mag release, ambi selector, reversible charging handle.
