As for Jason's list of guns, they all look like they are green lit in NJ. Good choices too...

Just my opinion but.... If you arent really familier with firearms a rifle is a good starting point. It teaches you all of the basics. Trigger control, breathing, sight picture and the like. I see a lot of shotgun trained people trying the ole point and click method with rifles and handguns and not getting the desired results.

If you want a good cheap Rifle get an SKS

If you want a good dependable shotgun just get a 20 gauge

If you want a good handgun get a .357 and shoot .38s out of it.

If Makarovs are People's Republik of New Jersey legal, its a good start for a Handgun...

I'm sure the Makarov is fine. Handguns need their own permit for each one, but as long as they don't exceed 15 rounds in the magazine, you're fine.
