Now that's cowboy action!

Look He even has a Winchester.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

A couple of little old ladies with "short-throw" 1873s beat me and my Marlin 1894 Cowboy Comp like we were red-headed step children.

No short stroke kits for me, don't believe in them. Besides, they are not approved for NCOWS matches.

I'm in it for the fun and the history. The NCOWS group I started with (and helped form) also does reenactments. We've done the OK Corral several times and we stage a train robbery on a local sight seeing line. I've not been active recently, but the group still does the train robbery. Yes to CAS. I am known as KC Colt and compete in the FC category and am the current and past KS state FC champion.

I love the shooting but love the people I shoot with more....8 year CAS shooter....

I agree with you on being able to hold my own with single action firearms. I think you should carry what you are most comfortable with and many times I carry a Ruger OM bisley with 6 loaded in a Mernickle SA carry rig behind my right hip. I am confident I can put 6 on target in less than 2 seconds (my shot timer confirms).

An Uberti '66 in .38sp with a 20-inch barrel (called a short rifle). It has been totally engraved on all brass surfaces by Jeff Flannery: receiver, fore end caps, butt plate. The stock has been refinished in oiled walnut, and the butt stock and fore end have been hand checkered. It has a short stroke action job by Cody Conahger. It has a full buckhorn rear and brass bead front sights and there are small 24 carat gold inlays on front and rear of barrel. I bought it used about 4 years ago from Lorenzo the Kid off the SASSWire forum and it is a blast to shoot.

Well I have to say that is one hell of a good looking rifle man. If you ever decide to sell it let me know. For now I'm working on tacking down a Uberti 1873 in 38 special. I think I've found one just waiting to hear back from the dealer.

Figure out where the clubs are nearest you and go watch some matches and talk to the people. At our match yesterday we had a guy selling custom made leather and another table full of guns for sale. We had probably a dozen different spectators and we had fun talking to them about the game. Or come to Kansas City on the 2nd or 4th Saturday and I'll equip you with guns and ammo and leather.

Listing of CAS clubs (notice the guy pictured on this page...Tame Bill who is my Club's founder): http://www.sassnet.com/clubs/Clubs_list.php?state=Texas

The local CAS group here usually has a table at a couple of the local gun shows.

For me I started collecting the guns first and then looking for a club to join.

Which is not a good way to do it at all! Definitely go check out a local chapter first and get as much time handling and checking out the different type of approved weapons as you can. Also check out all the leather rigs too, you can spend a lot of money shopping for leather, get a good idea of what works before you spend your hard earned money.

Oh and have as much fun as you can.

CAS has always looked like a lot of fun shooting wise. I just wish the LARPing/costume elements were not required. If it was just about shooting I'd probably have tried it out by now.

That is why you need to go to a local club and see how it is run. The clubs in my area aren't so strict on the costume side of things. Yea they encourage it but it iss\n't a huge part of the event.

Hmm, I'll take that into consideration and may check one out in person then. I just recall reading the rules on the main SASS website and saw all the stuff about coming up with a "name" and costume rules etc. That's not really my cup of tea at all.

Kansas City area? Come see us on the 2nd and 4th Saturday in Lenexa: http://www.powdercreekcowboys.org/home.html

Wear a hat, jeans, long sleeve shirt, and boots of some type and that is all you need constumewise. Let me know when you decide to show and I'll bring enough guns and ammo.

Were I to start CAS myself, I think it would be fun to adopt the persona of a Wild West zombie/vampire/demon hunter.

It's kinda funny that with the Civil War re-enactors it's the Confederates who outnumber the Union soldiers.

Stuff and nonsense..I see just as many people shooting in Jeans as those who get all costumed up/ You dont HAVE to spend a fortune on Clothes, Jeans, Boots, Button-down Shirt and a hat.
I've got 2 full setups
.44-40 Ruger Vaqueros (1 Blue 1 SS) Navy Arms Henry Rifle
.45 Colt 2 Cimmaron (Uberti) Colt SAA repros (1 7th Cavalry, 1 US volunteer Artillery) and an EMF Hartford carbine (Win 1892 copy)
Shotguns are a KBI Liberty II Hammered Double, an old "Peerless" brand Hammerless, and a Win 1897 Solid frame.

While there are clubs that go a little overboard on the dress-up, the game is a SHOOTING Game first and foremost. I've seen CAS guys go up against people shooting modern guns and beat the hell out of them

And some of the top CAS shooters, like Jasmine Jessie and Holy Terror, go on to be top shooters in the semi-auto games.

I think the biggest draw for CAS is that you can go either way, dress-up and have fun and/or do some really serious competition. Not to mention that it tends to be very family oriented, with several generations being represented (sometimes from the same family).
