Who told you that and when?

I think they were effected by the Big Scary Gun(tm) ban of '94.

But since that's gone they should be A-OK. :D

I think you might be confusing the '94 AW Ban with the '89 Import Ban.

The '89 Ban banned the importation of certain firearms. The gun industry got around that by legally importing the firearms, and then adding 10 U.S. compliant parts. With these 10 parts added, they would no longer be (technically) considered an import.

The '94 Ban (as I'm sure many of you are aware) really only affected certain (arguably, cosmetic) features of a rifle. These features being: bayonet lug, detachable magazine, telescoping/folding stock, protruding pistol grip, etc.. On an autoloading rifle, you were allowed two of these "evil" features. On an autoloading shotgun, you were permitted to have one feature. As you know, this ban has sunsetted and firearms are no longer subject to these ridiculous regulation.

Take the Romanian AK's you see currently flooding the market. While they are no longer subject to the AW Ban, since they are imported they are still regulated by the '89 Ban. So they can have all the features previously limited by the '94 Ban, yet must still retain 10 U.S. parts to comply with the '89 Import Ban.

Confusing, isn't it? :)

So I'm all psyched up to grab a Saiga next weekend but I decide to ask around with a few local people and see what their thoughts are.

The Ex Marine said "I don't know".

The Ex Cop said "I don't really know but my friends say they suck."

and the guy at the gun store said "Their a peice of shit. They malfunction all the time and have no accuracy."

When I told the guy at the gun store that every thing I read on them said they were good up to 300 yards if they had a good scope on them he said "I don't know of one that will shoot that far."

Then he tried to sell me an AK-47.
