For those who want an alternative to the Saiga, the Romanian AK's are also good stuff. I just bought one from AIM surplus for $279.00 plus shipping and recieving fees.

Yay for bringing threads back from the grave. Kyle would be so proud of me for using the search function.

I think it was MugWug that told me to look into these in the first place over a mini-14. So thanks to Mug first off. The price of the weapon has swayed my opinion quite a bit. I hadn't even heard of these before you brought it up.

Anyways, I've decided to go with the Saiga for my first rifle. The caliber that I've decided to go for is the .223.

My questions are as follows...

1: If I decide to use this rifle for dear hunting I've been told that I can use .223 but it has to be a certain grain count as .223 is the lowest .cal round you can use to hunt dear. (If not the lowest it's close to the bottom of the list.)

2: Is there another caliber I should look at using other then .223 that is just as common but would be more suitable for hunting? (I'm new to both the world of rifles and hunting.) And why would you pick that over .223?

3: Is the Saiga going to be more accurate then the AK? Is it worth putting a scope on it?

4: What kind of music would you listen to if zombies attacked the world?

5: If you guys suggest a caliber of ammunition (Be it .223 or other) what should I look for when purchasing the ammo? (Name brand/ grain count/ etc).

6: I loves me my high cap magazines. I assume that they make 30round magazines for .223 but what other calibers do they make them for?

I know allot of these questions have been answered throughout the forums but I wanted to make a reference point so I can go to one spot on the forums and find all the information I'm looking for on the Saiga.

Thanks again folks.

GunDown,
1. In my state you can't hunt with .223. Your state may differ, but most states say it's not a humane clean kill.

2.A better hunting round, and it's just as common is the 7.62x39. Yes the original AK round should do just fine in a Saiga. Also .308 is an even better hunting round and is pretty common as well, but much heavier.

3. A GOOD scope is always worth it.

4.Uh....the same kind I listen to now.

The saiga is a great rifle choice, good luck

Well I don't want anything to suffer. I spoke with my father tonight he also said I should go with the 7.62 if I didn't want to take the chance of hitting an animal and having it run off and die slowly.

I asked the question about the scope because I've been told that the AK is very inaccurate and it's not worth putting a scope on it. I want an accurate rifle so I wanted to make sure the Saiga was up to snuff.

Any ideal on what the best brand to buy 7.62 in is?

Ok I've done some asking and some browsing. I think I've come down to getting the Saiga 20" 7.62x39. The reason I picked this one is because aparently the Saiga 7.62x39 can be converted to take AK-47 magazines which have a higher cap and are much cheaper.

The guy at the gun store said the conversion wouldn't even cost that much.

I'm really starting ot get interested in getting a Saiga and I want something with a decent capacity.

Saiga12.com is all about the shotguns isn't it? The largest mag I've seen for the shotguns is 8 for a 12guage.

I'll second the recommendation for the Romanian versions to anyone looking for an economical/high capacity AK series rifle. From what I understand the SAR series is about dried up, but you can still see them at gun shows.

SAR1 - 7.62 x 39
SAR2 - 5.45 x 39
SAR3 - .223

While the fit and finish isn't exceptional, the reliability is good. Be careful if you happen to stumble across one of the Century '00 imports*. They were reported to have shoddy fire control internals (added by Century to comply with the '89 ban). My original had a soft hammer and I got rid of it after only 1000 rounds through it. The one I later bought has worked fine so far. "Trigger slap" is still prevailant, but that is to be expected with these rifles - though there is a fix for that as well.

I believe the Romanian WASR series is abundant right now. Pick up a Kobra site for it and you set.

* import date can be found on the receiver.

Roll Through The Rifle Section On The Forums. It May Take Some Searching But Youll Find It. 20s and .410s Can Take 10 Rounders.

I think they were effected by the Big Scary Gun(tm) ban of '94.

But since that's gone they should be A-OK. :D
