It's ok. I laughed. I was watching this thread for replies but they never came to my mailbox... meh... looks great. I like it. And as far as the job comment goes... I won't argue.

I work a lot, you work a lot, we'll both just agree to disagree and take it out on Kyle... deal?

Thanks for the props, guys. And Horatio, I didn't mean to sound so snappy. I was trying to be flippant. But it just came out all wrong... Will you come back to bed? :P
So, I took the thing to the range, and was underwhelmed. I'm getting about 2 MOA at 100 yards, which is okay, but not what I hoped for. My best group was two rounds touching and a third 1" away at 100 yards. I just smoothed up the trigger surfaces and lightened the spring a touch, as well as grinding off the two stage hump and shimming the trigger so there is less creep. This should REALLY help a lot. The pull is still a little heavy, but it's VERY crisp and there is NO creep at all. Yes, I made sure there was PLENTY of contact at the sear, so it's still very safe. Next step is to free float the barrel. Once that is done, I expect to get about 1 MOA. If not, it's time to think about recrowning or rebarreling. And the buttpad made from a flip flop? Fucking AWESOME. I put 50 rounds through that thing, and didn't feel a twinge.
Also, if anyone wants them, there are two AWESOME customized 8mm Mausers at a little gunshop I know of. $400 a piece, but WELL worth it. PM me if interested.

Oh, Bgaesop, I plan on doing the stock up in dark grey splotches and black tiger stripes over the light grey. And yes, the sling sucks, but it looked so COOL! I'm going to replace it eventually.

:D
BTW, free floated the barrel last night. If I have time and money I'll hit the range this weekend and see if there's any improvements. I'm running out of projects... I guess it's time to get cracking on that third movie, eh?

Ever considering getting the required books and slowly collecting tools, the making a firearm from scratch? I think that would rule. Though i'm not sure if it's legal or not. Anyone know?

I think you need to be a licensed gunsmith to make your own. I know you have to register them with the atf, I just don't know what licenses you need. I've been considering looking into this, so I'll tell you what I find out. Of course, it won't apply to canada. :P And as always, don't do anything stupid, kids. A knowledge of metallurgy, engineering, ballistics, and above all, applicable laws is mandatory when modifying firearms. In other words, if you don't know WTF you are doing, hire a pro (like I did to mount my scope).

Thanks, Minengr! That helps a lot. Of course, I wouldn't proceed without a lawyer's opinion as well.

Talking about your rifle you reminded me of Ray from "Ghostbusters" when he first pulled up in the Ecto-1.

He is bragging about what a deal he got on it, and then talks about everything that needs to be done to it.

And you're in the same situation as well, a great peice of equipment that has been SEVERELY mistreated.

Glad that you saved this wonderful gun before another moron got it.

I bet'll look amazing once you are done with it.

Damn you Jamoni. Between you and another custom Mauser I’ve been reading about, I’ve really got the bug to do this myself.

I reread this post and have a couple of questions. I noticed in the pics you have some high rings for your scope. Is this to keep the bolt from hitting the scope, or is it personal preference? If it is personal preference, did you still have the bolt re-welded and/or reshaped so you could use lower rings? With the higher rings is there a problems getting a good cheek weld? Did you do the re-blue or someone else?

There is a hacked on 98 at a local shop that seems to be calling my name. I’m afraid if I purchase it, I’m going to spend $600 turning a $75 rifle into a $300 rifle.

The high rings are because I didn't have the bolt handle reshaped. It would cause problems, but if you look carefully you can see that I built the comb up a bit with bondo. I had planned to reshape the bolt later. I did the blueing myself. I just used cold blue, which sufficed bacuse there wasn't much damage to the original blueing.
You are right about spending $600 to make a $300 rifle.
