Colt's new smart gun?

Post by Boondock » Mon Feb 16, 2015 5:15 pm

In the R&D stage for the Canadian DRDC. Shares a few similarities with the DARPA mock-ups in the states. Still, it's kinda crazy, from Gizmodo, enjoy:

The prototype, in development since 2009 through the Soldier Integrated Precision Effects Systems (SIPES) project, includes a firing mechanism to shoot lightweight cased telescoped ammunition, a secondary effects module for increased firepower and a NATO standard power and data rail to integrate accessories like electro-optical sights and position sensors.

Some more details here: http://www.funker530.com/canadas-new-sm ... -unveiled/

It uses cased telescoped ammunition in a polymer case to reduce ammo weight by 40%. The “smart” designation comes from the weapon’s ability to access a command network in which the gun can receive data, pinpoint targets, and even fire on its own when on target. The network will be able to share these target and threat locations to other ground units nearby (think Blue Force Tracker/FBCB in gun form). It is rumored to also incorporate tracking point-style projectile guidance technology in which the ammo is also “smart” and can change path mid-flight.

Looks like it shares some DNA with the Army's OICW project.

I predict it will be shelved for the same reasons.

LOL it's 'not man fireable' because its a partially constructed functional testbed. Look at the big hunk of rapid prototyping rail near the bottom of it behind the fire control group. Note that the entirely fire control group is currently 3D printed and bolted together.

That thing is absolutely not safe to be fired yet.
