132 year old gun found leaning against tree

Post by Mikeyboy » Fri Jan 16, 2015 10:48 am

Cool find out of Great Basin National park in Nevada. A very worn Winchester 1873 Rifle was found in the middle of nowhere leaning against the tree. I wonder what the back story was. Did the original owner die, or did he simply misplaced it. Anyway a weird story.

Was there a 132 year old man taking a dump nearby?

That is my guess. Some pioneer, prospector or settler going west, traveling alone stopped to take a dump. He leaned the rifle against the tree to take care of business and got attacked/eaten by a mountain lion.

For the gun being 132 years old, it looks to be in pretty good condition for its age and area it was found in.

Of course, the thing could crumble into dust once handled for all I know.

Just because the rifle is 132 years old doesn't mean that it's been sitting in the park for that long. Possible? Sure. But it's also possible that someone accidentally left it afterward too.

It's improbable that it was left intentionally, and someone out hiking/hunting with it probably would not have done so with an unloaded weapon. The ammunition within it is probably the best way to determine a range for when it could have been left.

Looking more closely at the pictures, it looks like it may have just been left there recently. Just how recently it was left there remains to be seen, though.

I'm thinking 132 years worth of being left out in the open like that would've rusted it a lot more than it is.

I'm a little skeptical that it sat there for 132 years. In Russia, there's a forest where trees have grown around grenades, through helmets, around machine guns, and such that fell and were left during WWII.

Of course, I know little to nothing about the flora of the Southwest, so it may be possible.

looking at the pictures, the magazine tube has a couple spots rusted all the way through and the wood has worn quite a bit on the stock. With it being leaned against a conifer like that, it may have protected it some from the rain.
Still a neat find. I would have like to be the one to find it!

It does seem somewhat suspect that this rifle was actually left abandoned and leaning against a tree for over a hundred years.

Still, it's an engaging thought, an unintended time capsule from another era. The articles I read suggest that the finder has no intention of trying to restore the firearm; electing to leave it in its found, extremely weathered condition. That somehow seems appropriate.

I don't know much about the 1873.. should the trigger be set to the rear the way it is, or did the internals of the trigger group possibly rust away?

Just a thought, but it might be an indication that it has been there for some time.

Couple hundred years from now someone is going to find a AR-15 with wood furniture in .50 Beowulf leaned up against a rock in Utah.

I'm in doubt mostly because of the odds that it would remain standing in that position for so long... I'm not plant expert, but how old do those tree's live? It obviously would to have been nearly full grown when the gun was left there (it had to be leaning against something, right?) so could the tree it's leaning against really be that old?

I wondered about the tree also.

I do believe in the weathering looking about right. I've seen a lot of old old weathered wooden and metal stuff in the high desert areas. Including what was probably a 100+ year old wooden box car in surprisingly good shape.

Not sure what kind of tree that is, but some of those desert plants grow slowly and live for centuries

This article says it was a Juniper. It also says the gun was unloaded, but chambered for .44-40. So much for the ammo telling us how long it was there.
