How often do you Clean/Lube your carry gun?

Post by Nightwing » Wed Jan 07, 2015 7:04 pm

Topic line says it all, trying to get a pulse on what should be my weekly/bi-monthly/monthly habit?

Once every two weeks, unless:
A) it's been fired, OR
B) it's been exposed to rain, snow, sweat, blood, dirt, OR
C) I am really bored and want to fiddle with something.

And no, I'm not a product snob. IMO, it doesn't make as big a difference which cleaners and lubes are used as people would like to believe. Just one guy's opinion, though.

I am not a product snob in any way. I use motor oil as my main lube, & CPL foam to clean. Just curious how long folks like to go before cleaning/wiping down their used carry gun if it doesn't get use.

Since nobody asked, :) I like MPro7 for cleaning, mainly because it doesn't smell, seems to clean about the same as everyone else, but on my competition gun I do still use Butch's Born shine or Hoppes, in the barrel but that gun only sees lead

About once a quarter but rock a well worn glock so this works for me...when I carried other pistols the frequency needed to be increased sometimes to weekly (1911 cough cough) ....also I have noticed that since I converted to frog lube it stays cleaner less lint etc.

I also will not carry a weapon that has not been fired since its last disassembly so every gun I carry has had at least one mag shot out of it before it is "in service".

I never clean my carry guns unless they've been shot or exposed to some nasty shit which is never. But I shoot 2-3 times a month so they see regular maintenance. The only guns I carry are a Sig 229 and a 3" K frame Smith, both are far from finicky. So, never.

I'm poor so I carry my SR22....
I usually clean mine about every two weeks, maybe every week if I'm bored. Mostly it's just a quick brush off to guard against dust and lint build up. I clean all my firearms after trips to the range, but maybe that's just bad army habits.

Can't carry, but for the sake of the post I'll just refer to my nightstand gun. I probably "feel" the need to do a proper cleaning of it after a few hundred rounds. Though more often than not, I end up cleaning it after most range trips regardless since I like to fiddle with things in my hands a lot. I do always lube it after the range, no matter what though. Mostly because of the ridiculous humidity I deal with on a day to day basis. The gun in question is a XDM, so it is pretty simple and quick to give it a once over. If I dont go shooting for awhile, I'll tend to just check and see how everything is looking. I use grease on my slide rails, so there is no worry about that drying up. So I may just do a couple of drops over the rest if things are looking dry.

Every 500-1000 rounds. Its a Glock. In the meantime if I get it really muddy or gritty during training I will rinse it off in a puddle and squirt lube in it.

I expect it would depend on where you live and what you do.
For me, at least once a week. Or when it needs it - which is often.

But my carry gun isn't just going to the office, riding in the car, and sitting with me watching TV.
My carry gun is often open carried when I am out working on my farm in case I run into a critter. So weather is an issue.
Yesterday when I was out doing morning chores it was -2 F. So when I was done and back in the house - the gun was covered in condensation and needed wiped down. Going to be the same thing this morning.
Or if it is raining - it gets cleaned.
Or after using my chainsaw to drop/section/etc trees and my holster needs a pile of sawdust dumped and the gun cleaned again...

So if everything is ok, then once a week to get the dust off of it and keep it from rusting.
Otherwise, when it needs it.
... I will show you fear in a handful of dust...

Ditto to all this.

The only thing I feel is moronic are those folks who feel the need to clean their pistols in a dishwasher.

Before a range trip, or toward the end of a range trip, prior to putting another mag or two through it. Then it gets holstered with only slight dirtiness. I don't like taking apart a carry gun to do anything unless I can immediately test full function afterward.

I don't trust, I verify.

I clean it every 50 rounds or so. My Para gets fired randomly at hogs and predators about that many times between quarterly range days here on the farm. After a range day, I clean it with Hoppe's #9 then lube the rails with 0-20 wt synthetic motor oil and rub down the outside with a polish layer of RIG gun grease.

Carry gun is a S&W Shield 9. Though I haven't really "cleaned" it since it's initial degreasing/regreasing, I tend to disassemble it and wipe it down every couple of days just out of habit.

Every 300rds or so(so, every couple of range trips). Both my Glock and Shield are pretty forgiving.
