Disguising a gun cabinet?

Post by KnifeStyle » Fri Jun 20, 2014 10:54 am

I'm very soon moving to a new place, and finally have the room to purchase a cheap Stack-on or something similar to keep my guns locked up instead of improvising hiding places. I'm aware that it's just a mild deterrent, but with how often I move and not having a house of my own it makes sense to have something portable and temporary that I can bolt down and patch up later on. However, I started thinking...The bedroom closet is the first place to hit during a robbery, why should I put my gun locker in there? What about placing it elsewhere in the house and trying to disguise it as an electrical box or something similar? I'm looking for a smaller model as I only need to store a 10/22, AR, ammo, and possibly a bolt action later on. How could I go about camouflaging a gun locker into a generic feature of a townhouse, while optimizing the internal gun storage?

Cut pieces of a cardboard box and tape them around the outside and scribble "Xmas Lights" on it?

That's a great idea.

Hiding it, anchoring it or both is a good idea. Putting it somewhere that is easy to access does offer a challenge. Closets and pantries are popular places.

The first 3 picts are self explanatory. The second set would be perfect for a raised wood floor or a house with a basement.

Go buy a heavy steel Job Box or equivalent from a hardware store. They're used to store tools on work sites.

Put a rug or table cloth over it and use it as a coffee table. It'll also be WAY more secure, and cheaper, than that crappy Stack On RSC you're talking about getting.

A wood coffee table with that last safe installed under it, with matching wood sides to hide it.

I was thinking maybe turn it into a coffee table, with a removable top or side panels.

Here in the UK, your gun-safe (required by law) MUST be hidden from view "from a casual visitor to the home".

The general approach is to install the locker inside a wardrobe, with hardened-steel bolts connecting the safe (through the panel of the wardrobe) to a load bearing wall/pillar of the house. I have heard of some more gung-ho shooters having an entire hardened "gun room" in their house, but they've had argue their case very hard to the policeman who grants licences unless it was windowless cellar.
