Hurricane season.

Postby barragemike » Fri May 20, 2011 1:24 pm

So i open up the newspaper this morning, and i read this "US predicts 3 to 6 major hurricanes"
Almost instantly, it got me in the mood to double check all of my prep gear, make sure it's all in the correct place, and easily accessible.

I plan on going to the grocery store later on, and mainly getting some water, and maybe some mosquito candles.

Just wondering if anyone else has started to plan for the up coming hurricane season.I know a lot of you are probably already ready to deal with it.
With me living in FL i feel that it's a pretty big deal i'm ready when they hit land.

Also sorry if this is in the wrong area.

Yes there are many of us in hurricane country and most have started or have completed the 2011 hurricane preps. You do not say where in FL but I assume you are experienced when it comes to hurricanes.

However there are many threads in the forum dealing such preps.

The one key thing to hurricane prep is evacuation planning. If you are exposed and have to evacuate, planning around this subject should in depth and updated annually.

I've got just about everything I need. I will be getting more bottled water. When Ike hit, my town had low (none at some homes) water pressure. When the water came on, we were under a boil-water notice for a few days. My family and pets were all on bottled water until the notice was lifted. That's the first thing that seems to run out in stores, and I don't think we could ever have enough water. Hurricane preps are a way of life for me. My daughter used to think I was going overboard until Ike hit. She'd never seen a hurricane, and didn't really remember Tropical Storm Allison. After Ike, she's now with me on the prepping.

That Altoid Tin solar charger looks nice! I may have to consider one as part of my kit. I've got a solar/crank-powered radio that can charge a cell phone, but that Altoid charger might be even better. I've got to buy a couple of USB cords to use either the radio or Altoid charger now.

Even for those not evacuating, keeping up with the latest on this subject can be valuable. I live within a mile of a major evacuation route, so my getting home is affected by the evacuees. I've got a couple alternative routes home mapped out to help me.

I'm on the tail end of where a major hurricane would normally strike but even I am planning for the upcoming season. I don't think you should ever be unprepared or underprepared for a known situation that you have been given more than enough time to prepare for.

Those of us on the Texas coast have something to watch now: Tropical Storm Don. I hope everyone is prepped and monitoring news and weather information services.
