have you considered asking if you can store a lock foot locker of gear at their house as part of your emergency plans. They never need to know what is in it as it is for you [you paranoid goof]. But a .22 revolver and a brink of ammo or a 12 ga pump or some 20 ga buckshot could also be in there with your spare clothes and such and they would never know.

However in a true emergency you could simply text them the combination of the lock, or hid the combo somewhere in their house.

Not as good as on going training, but a good way to know they can upgrade their preps w/o being pushy.
