I re-did the basic truck load and organized my tool box. Had to untangle my ropes and tie downs as the kids got into them the other day. Planning on getting some more automotive tools to keep in the truck. Finally got the winter gear out but left a couple blankets for the little ones.

planting a few shin dagger cactus behind our ac unit and under a window. in a couple of years these will become gut daggers and i doubt anyone will spend much time working to open a window sitting in these....

Working on laying on some more non-perishable food and doing a shit ton of general catch up maintenance on the house. Looking into making the house more efficient and better insulated. Seems like my other preps are being held back by me spending money on overly high utilities.

I hear ya. We've had really nice temperatures throughout May and we haven't needed to either heat or cool the house much at all and it shows on our bills. Curtains to block windows that get a lot of sun in summertime is one simple way to start.

Recent activities: Cleaned out dryer vent to increase efficiency, cycled stored water, and partially cleaned out the garage to make room for eventual project work. Mrs. Nomad has done a great job at tending our little container garden. :D

Going over the fire drill for our apartment.

This will involve going over improvised harnesses for both my wife and I plus our 2 year old son, specifying and prepping belay & abseil anchor points etc.

Finishing a raised garden frame and hopefully getting some black dirt in there also. Kind of prepping- will can any veggies that don't get eaten right away...

well not strictly this weekend per se... but Im moving into my new home in about 2 weeks, so Ive just ordered the below to start doing my prep properly... Added to that Im going to start educating the Long Haired General and her kids about certain bits and pieces, unpack all the relevant bits and pieces and supplies that I've bought over the past 8 weeks since Ive registered on here, sort through them, get my own BOB sorted out, then make up a car BOB ... amongst all the other jobs I'll no doubt have to do when I move in !! :D

Image

35 litre airproof/waterproof storage tubs... x 2 from eBay...

Image

20 Bic disposable lighters... again from eBay...

Image

Emergency candles.. 9 in a pack.. 3 packs ordered... (this is a back up to my wind up lanterns)

Image

2 x 20 litre British Army water jerry cans... just to start with

Image

And the good old ammo tin for keeping anything that may go up in flames.. like the above mentioned lighters !! Paint it red and get some warnings on it..

So thats it.. all looking good so far.. I'll post pics when Ive got it started at home... along with my "food porn" that Im going to start storing...

Cheers,

'Paws.

I've got a To Do List that is about 8 pages long and all of it affects the family lol. Within the next two weeks I'll primarily be:

Working on the garden and canning veggies.
Putting in a attic fan.
Organizing my workshop.
Starting on my sons first bookshelf.
and the myriad other tasks my dear wife sets out for me lol.

I'm going to rearrange my supplies as well as rotate (consume) expiring stock of food. I try to do this at least once a month.

Not this weekend, but next, I will be taking some of my in laws and their cousins on a family campout. I will be teaching them about some fishing, shooting (If I can get a 22 in time), outdoor cooking, and taking them on some hikes. I hope that I can get more of them thinking in a prepper mindset by taking them on this trip.
When I was born, they told me the chance of getting out of this life alive was slim.

I bought two blue 55 GAL food grade barrels. One will be water storage and the other a rain barrel back up. During the four power outages due to the grass fires and heat, I decided I need more emergency light sources here.

So, after not doing much lately (actually doing nothing) in the realm of stocking, prepping. I am back at it. I decided to start with the back of the house and move my way to the front. That means cleaning out the bathroom cabinets and closets to make room for "stuff". I have a FAK in process and just ordered some more things from Amazon, but still need to find a bag of some type to organize and pack said FAK into. Will be an interesting conversation about the order when it all starts showing up. So now on to the bathroom cabinets. I know I should be working on more food and water, but I go where I can and do what I can without too much hassle, or doomsday paranoia, making-fun of me talk. My goal, at least for now, is 3 months for my husband and myself with the possibility of my Mom, daughter, son-in-law and 2 grand babies (3 yrs and 3 months).

On a good note, i am very comfortable with my EDC bag and what I carry. The bag I am putting together for my car is almost complete. A bit worried about the record breaking heat we have had here this summer and the stuff in the trunk. No where to park in the shade as we are very short on trees here in Lubbock.

All in all things are SLOWLY coming together. Now, off to more cleaning, organizing, list making and stacking.

My wife and I are mostly working on our physical fitness: one hour of aerobic exercise (biking, or sometimes jogging) one day, alternated with one hour on anaerobic exercise (weights, crunches, etc.) the next day.

Secondarily we're trying to plan ahead more with our finances, although to be totally honest this is more about saving up for things we want to do (mostly cheap travel) rather than preparing for a major emergency.

Practiced putting up the new (to us) tent which has room for all of us. Will sleep in it tonite w/ my older girl which will get her used to it, and to sleeping on the ground. (This is the only pure "family" project - but the others, while not specifically family, are part of the foundation.)

Brought my budget up to date (ouch!) so I don't overspend.

Got 5 food grade pails free from the bakery, will wash out tonite.

Researched where to get cheap Mylar bags, should just pull the trigger and order them...

Made homemade emergency bars and finally got the recipe right, apparently, will seal them up and make more.

What recipe did you use? I'm interested in seeing it.

http://foodstorageandsurvival.com/make- ... ival-bars/

The recipe is easy - the problem is a) I messed up and b) my powdered milk was ancient. Just use stuff that's not expired. She gives 1 and 2 year follow up - decent at year one, edible at year two. They're a decent but dry snack when fresh.

I'm now working on forming them into 6-12 smaller bars without being incredibly messy.

Reevaluated BOB's.
Made a BOB for my 1 yr old.
Replaced expired stuff.

Still not complete but it's a start.

Fed the family a completely food storage breakfast - the preppers version of disaster French toast. Ground grain in the mill (what a pain!), made yeast bread, made French toast with powdered milk & powdered eggs. I did not use the $8/lb canned butter, however. Large amounts were eaten by all, including the little picky eater.

For lunch, made flour tortillas for the first time (turns out to be pretty easy!) and made our usual black bean burritos. Which were eaten by everyone who usually eats them (picky eater never eats them anyway...).

Acquired fire extinguishers ( only one in the house didn't work   )
noticed some very cheap ($1-4) little toolsets while at Lowes, got a couple for the car kits.

(edit) Let elder daughter practice lighting a fire in mild-moderate wind. She did good with the matches, just couldn't quite get the thing to light.

I took the entire family on 3.5 mile hike. I know not a very long distance but consider ring our youngesjust turned 5 and completed it on her own two feet. We hike through some rugged terrain, identified plants, trees, and different animal tracks. Discussed good shelter sites. Played around with "tactical sign language". When we finished we went home and built a primitive camp fire and roasted hotdogs and made smores FTW. Everyone had a great time and are looking forward to our next adventure together.
Hoping to bring back common sense to the prepping community.
