We took our Scout group (Troop, Pack and Colony) to winter camp this past weekend. It was the first chance for sledding all year, so we did A LOT, but we wanted to do some Scouting too!

We had 23 youth and about 10 Scouters and parents, 1 furnace heated cabin for Colony (5-7 year olds) and Pack (8-10 year olds) and 1 woodstove heated cabin for Troop (11-13 year olds). We didn't have enough snow for quinzees but did set up a tent and a tarp shelter for 2 of our leaders to show the youth how real wintering camping can be done. (And to reassure the inexperienced adults.)

http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h35 ... ure024.jpg

On Friday night, we charged Troop with a campfire contest. They had to find dry tinder and kindling in the morning and get their fires lit by 11:30am, with a good bed of coals for cooking by noon.

To help the process, we took everyone on a huge (uphill) hike and taught them about tinder and kindling along the way, along with a little tracking, map and compass work, Hug a Tree and, of course, the basics of winter clothing and survival kits.

While the Scouts were fire building, Pack and Colony got a hands-on lesson in campfire cooking with tin foil and coals. They made their own meal packs and then used the Scout's coals to cook them. After that, the Scouts had a lesson in dutch oven cooking and made a really yummy venison stew and bannock for dinner.

Everyone had a great time. Pack and Troop got some important badgework done and everyone got their fill of GT snowracing!

Made 2 types of totally food storage cookies. One good, other OK. Tried cooking one in skillet on stove top, no go so far...

For the children, of course, and to keep prepper-tolerant husband happy. Of course I don't really want cookies...

My wife and I bought a pressure canner, and the blue ball recipe book. We managed to can 8 pounds of chicken stew, and some beef stew. This week I'll be working on creating a storage space and shelving in the attached garage.

::::::Doing happy dance::::::: My prepping this weekend/week will consist of going to a gun show and searching for a deal on an AK-47. If I can't find a better deal than the one I have my eye on online than I will be ordering a Saiga AK-47 conversion and case with two spare mags. I have already recieved the ammo and magloader for it. I also have two more mags on order.
Once the gun is here I'll sight it in at the gunshop and probably make a paracord sling for it. I don't know how much practice I'll get with it untl next month though. End of April I'll be taking it to my church's mens retreat. I'm sure we will run quite a bit of ammo though it there.

You seem to know of an awful lot of abandoned sites, man- we really need to compare notes sometime.

OT: Getting things ready this week to welcome the newest member of the family- she's due for arrival end of March :D

I'm there with you. The gun show is this weekend, I get paid friday and still have some tax dollars in my account. I am gonna look for a good priced AK. If I dont find that then I'm going with an SKS and a thousand rounds and gonna be happy.

http://neaca.com/SaratogaSpringsNYArmFair.htm - gun show this weekend in Saratoga, NY...I might combine this with a quick visit to Frontier Town for a ZS-tastic Weekend of Win!

Today my sons and I did a little geocaching. We had 7 finds today and a several miles of hiking to get to them. The boys had a blast.
Hoping to bring back common sense to the prepping community.

We're working on getting all of the 2-liter bottles I have sitting empty filled with water and getting her BOB going. Yes, I know..she should have already had one but up until now I've kept her stuff with mine.

Today, I showed the kids how to transplant free range corn. (It was growing beside the mancave from a mishap with a 50lb bag of popcorn) Then I restocked the BOB in the truck for long rides. Seems there will be some extended travel with kiddos soon. Not a great prep weekend, but squeezing it inbetween spring cleaning and organizing for a big change.

Welcomed the newest member of the family, the next generation of preppers :)
Also had a good talk with her dad, regarding how he wants to get set up for his new family dynamic- this is the first child for him and my daughter. I foresee a lot of time with the SIL's in the mancave this summer.

I am moving and organizing stock..I have new flooring coming in on Friday so I had to move my shelves and curio (currently housing a lot of food preps) anyhow for that so I thought I may as well re-do it and take inventory while I'm at it.

I am planning on updating the clothing and food in my family's BOB's. Last time to work on two, in 6 months when I do my next update, I will need to do three!
When I was born, they told me the chance of getting out of this life alive was slim.

Today is grocery shopping day for me. Going to add some more to the panty and then then do a rotation and reorganization of it. This week's additions are going to be more rice, spaghetti sauce and canned veggies, because they're on sale for about half price so I can double up on what we usually eat.

Hubby and son are going to give both vehicles an oil change this weekend. He usually buys an extra oil filter, oil, washer fluid, etc. every time. That way we add to our vehicle maintenance inventory every 3 months or so.

We're also going to participate in Earth Hour tonight by roasting marshmallows over a little camp fire in our backyard using one of our homemade hobo stoves. Fire starting practice for our 8 year old and yummy s'mores for everyone!

This weekend's big project is to turn our unused, junk collecting work shop in the basement into a cold storage room. The spin off will be a garage make over to organize all the stuff that seemed to explode in there over the winter, making room for the relocarion work room tools and supplies.

Will spend Sunday loading up the BOV and the alternate BOL ( pop up camper ) for a 3 day 2 night campout, focusing on knot tying, whittling, fire making, and bike riding.

We're digging up the front yard in front of the house to put flowers in. (We had to pull up massive 40 year old shrubs from hell first!) I'm going to go with pretty flowers PLUS some garden plants and some other edibles eventually. I also signed up to learn how to shoot. I haven't touched a handgun ever, but I used to shoot my cousins shotguns when I was a teenager. So I basically need to learn how to defend myself and family. We're also adding shelving to a huge(to me) army surplus cabinet for storing food and water in. And my mom passed away Friday and I collected all the empty two liters from everyone stopping by. I'm going to clean them and fill them too.

I would like to get the kid to start carrying and knowing how to use some basic bob gear in his school bag. By small I mean just a pelican case with harmless stuff a 8 yo can bring to school.

Pre pay phone
Gatorade packet
Granola bar
Jerky
Whistle
Light stick
Fruit leather
Pen /pad
And always ....band aids
Juice box or bottled water

Granted I am not looking for him to survive on his own.. Just a little reassurance when he gets stuck at school for tornado drills/sirens .
