First post... hello from SW Washington State

Post by Apollo-11 » Thu Dec 20, 2007 10:41 pm

Not much to say here... I am introducing myself to a group of strange strangers.

I have recently survived the flood of 2007 with no real problem other than a high water mark on my ankles. A job site that I work at up north required extensive repair after an 80 foot tall Doug Fir uprooted and fell on everything.

Preparing here at home and at work for the next disaster, be it zombie outbreak or whatever... good to meet some like-minded people and talk (freeze dried) turkey!

Excellent... looks like we got some great people from OR/WA here. I work in Portland and commute in every day. The big "if/when" in the back of my head is an earthquake taking down a couple of the bridges. I have some preps at work if I'm stuck there, but it would be a close to end-of-the-world scenario for the area. Portland is *very* reliant on its bridges.

Plus those people who just got a foot of rain... I have been in that scenario back in the flood of 1996... We have had some interesting WX this season and it's not even really winter yet.

Tidal waves, earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, ice storms, and rampant coffee shortages. Aaah, I love the Pacific Northwest!

Ah, volcanoes don't scare me. I grew up on the foothills of Mt. St. Helens. Whenever she burped, we got to go home and have a mini vacation. So I think that's what made me a disaster junkie!

Portland has a few, me being one of them.

As for the bridges
I am also certified in NET and I just found out about the 6-7 redundant contingency plans incase of bridge trouble if "the big one" hits. In a nut shell:

1) Within a few hours, local Corps of engineers, firefighters, officials de jour, et al. will have the bridges rated for passing.
2) Army Corps of Engineers will set up pontoon bridges in needed areas. They have the capability to set up 5 simultaneously on a good day.
3) Local businesses are in communications with POEM (Portland Office of Emergency Managment) and most are willing (if able) to ferry folks over the Willamette. I do not know of the Columbia though.

Portland to Vancouver would be the bigger issue though.

If we get the Sedition Zone quake though - forget about it.
