Re: Yet another storage review

I love those! However, I am doing more and more home canning so it isn't something I can use now.

Re: Money advice

My husband and I got into CC trouble about 9 years ago. We had steady income, no savings, a house that was falling apart and 4 teenagers and an exwife who ran up $60K in bills before she left. We struggled with debt repayment plans, bankruptcy and everything. We finally took the advise of experts an...

Re: Growing food and or herbs in a dorm room?

get one of those plant growing machines (on tv or at Sears) and grow some herbs and veggies. If that's too much, you can always grow sprouts. They don't take much time and do most of the work. They even have refill cartridges that replace what you grow.

Re: Snow storm in Maine

Great first post! I think that heavy snow can srew with you barrings no matter whether you are in the woods or in the back yard...same with heavy fog. I got caught this winter coming back from the dump in super heavy fog. I couldn't see more than 5-6 feet in front of the truck and I was on our own b...

Re: You have one day before the SHTF

hmm, depends on the disaster. If it was extreemly serious, I would call the kids and have them make plans to come to the house. Some would argue, so I probably wouldn't tell them why, just that it's a life and death matter; since they think one of us is going to kick off early, that wouldn't be a st...

Re: Worried about the trees...

not really a crazy thought at all, just one that I hadn't thought of. We have about 30 acres in trees and another 30 we are hoping to buy next door, so we have enough wood for us for a lifetime. Only been here a year and so far we've only used downed and damaged trees. Wood needs a good 6 months to ...

Re: Would your family hold together in the PAW?

Our family is scattered and many won't make it here. IF they did, I think they would all make it. They are all mostly aware of our thinking, our plans and have discussed it to some extent. Each time they visit, they come up with more of a plan. My oldest is 30 and the youngest is 22, so they aren't ...

Re: Who's ready now?

Yeah, I'm ready. We'd do ok for about 3 months no matter what happened without anything extra, but I'd like to be BETTER prepared... we could use: more water storage another 3 months savings better organized preps another 3 months of food. I think as a preparedness type, you never feel fully prepare...

Every day I am hearing more and more people express the feelings and behaviors that you are, both on the boards and off of them. I, myself are having those behaviors of staying in more, wishing more people would act, heping people more and getting more and more concerned about the news. I have not m...

Re: Wikihow: Apply Lessons Learned From the Great Depression

My folks were young in the Depression and I listened to them and my grandmother talk about it. They were smart and my grandmother stockpiled. We also went through a nasty recession in the early 70's and I can remember never being full...I saw my mother feed 7 people from one large can of raviolli. T...

Re: Who are you responsible for when SHTF? Do you have a plan?

Right now, in simple emergencies, it's just me and my husband. However, we have 5 children, each with a spouse and 2 grandchildren in travel distance as well as 3 more step grands that might make it here, one with another grandma in tow. So, worst case scenario there would be 18 of us. I am not prep...

One of the guys from another forum who lives up there has been keeping us posted. He said that his local store sold out of 80,000 filter masks in a couple of days, and that all the auto departments are out of air filters already. I hope they get a shipment in before it blows!

Re: coffee : canned, vac-sealed, or green?

From my personal experience, the vacuum sealed bricks and the freeze dried instant will last for years. I believe that you can get good quality coffee in the bricks as well, so if you are picky about your coffee, that would be the way to go. Another thing to consider is the method that you use to ma...

Re: About batteries

I have been getting my batteries at Wally World, but I'm sick of that...the prices are right, but sometimes they are dead in the package. I got a really cool gadget that has helped us out a lot...it's a battery storage unit (google it) with a tester on the top. We hung it just inside the basement do...
