Re: What to carry when your job prohibits weapons?

There is so much to say about this, but let me start by focusing on the gun issue. Most banks will actually let you store a handgun in a safe deposit box. Every time I have asked I have been told yes, sometimes unloaded or sometimes I have been told the gun is OK but ammo is not. But every bank has ...

Re: 20 metre Bugout: Modustollens' First Entry

my thought is that you should be able to use PVC to make both a base, and a protective cover with a few added pieces. I've done lots of PVC based building over the years, it can be surprisingly sturdy. A sleeve of larger diameter PVC over your current cover and a couple of connectors and "T" joints ...

The advantage I see to the vest is that you have it on you when you are driving and keep it with you every time you get out, or when you leave you campsite, or when you go over to talk to somebody.

It seems less obvious than a duty belt full of stuff.

It's been a few years since I lived in PDX ... The ham radio outlet has a store in Beaverton. They were always very friendly and love to get people into HAM. These days you can get a workable handie talkie for under $100 for him and a base with more power for you at home if you want. HAM is your bes...

Re: Concealed Carry: BUGs vs Mags

Base your decision on your life style, legal climate and likely risks. There were times I carried 2 guns because I was in and out of a car all day, and my BUG was carried in way that was extremely easy to access when sitting with a seat belt on. Now I carry 1 gun because I litigate a lot more and my...

Re: Real (first?) world problems

How about a small sewing/repair kit?
a few pieces of hardware, 2 or 3; nails, nuts, bolts and washers, a little fine wire and a little stiff wire.

One thing to ask yourself is what kind of things do you really KNOW how to use? What do you need to do that?

I can agree with it being light weight. That is what makes it rock for a BoB.

The cutting power/ ounce ratio is really good.

Stuff a Bob is all about compromise. I like this one.

The handle is 30" long...not really a thrower.
And about 5 oz lighter than the trail hawk, so it is a cutting tool, not a hammer. but a really nice cutting tool.

cold steel viking hand axe

I got the email and drank the koolaid, and ordered a cold steel viking hand axe. I will test it as soon as I am able but first take is that this will a GREAT bug out item. Serious weapon, serious tool. I can use it with 1 hand or with 2 hands. And it's lighter than many tomahawk that are 1/2 as long...

I'm pretty sure they are mistaken on the 49 sates claim. I think this would probably qualify as a felony "infernal device" in Massachusetts for example.

The real value of a car battery power system is if you still need to drive and can have it running in your car, using otherwise wasted power.

but that's not what you're really thinking about.

replace on of your make up bags with a ziplock freezer bag. It gives you more options that garbage bags alone. look at what skills you already have. Are there any tools or materials that, if you had them would allow you to use those skills better? For example I worked with wire for a long time, and ...

You have a ham radio outlet store out near beaverton. They are very friendly. Ham is the best way to keep in contact. Another option is plan now with human capital. Who do you know who might already have a boat that they keep on the side of the river you are on? Can you make friends now with somebod...

The better to question to my mind is how many CCW holders would it have taken to turn the tables?

If the bad guys know how many guns they face you are already behind the curve. They could try it again with the officer and one or two CCW pistols in the office staff.

I have in my go to home shotgun at times when I thought the most likely thing I would need to engage in a hurry was a coyote or racoon near my hen house. I would load a high brass #4 or #2 shot, then buck then slug, for my 1st 3 rounds. My thought was that I did not want to damage things about a var...

Let me chime in on the debt issue. Pay off your high interest cards. remember a credit card with lots of room on it is a great no cost prep. You can live for a long time on just a credit card if you need to. But it is most useful if it is paid off and has as high a limit as you can get. As far as fo...

What things are better kept in a climate controlled locker than your car? no reason to waste good light weight food on an indoor locker. How about some canned food?. Great post it really got me thinking. I will weigh out my preferred load out later, but I have a few comments I want to be sure and post. 1. I am a gun guy and a firm believer that you should have a gun in your BoB if it's legally possible. 2. If you are not in a war zone or a zombie movie, you need...

I am a civil trial lawyer, and have been practicing law for more than 20 years. But I have never had to defend a reload case. That said take my free advice for what you think it is worth. 1. It matters less what you do that why you do it. "I reload to get the hottest, deadliest load I can" vs. "I re...

I used a 'reload tube" for paintball and cut ti down to pen length. I used it to carry hardware I did not want to get messed up, mails, screws treble hooks etc. But you could use the same method to carry OTC drugs, or other survival supplies. As I recall WWII pilots would make small survival kits in...

Not to highjack, but besides weight, BTUs and availability is flexibility. That is what can your stove or fuel be used for besides boiling water. In a Bob where every oz and sq in is dear i have been leaning towards fuels with other useful properties. everclear can be a fuel, disinfect an area and b...
