Re: Wuhan Coronavirus Thread

I have a question regarding the "Total Deaths" vs "Total Recovered" numbers listed at this site: https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6 Their numbers have 1,438 confirmed cases and 42 deaths which implies a ~3% death rate. Bad but not up th...

Re: Wuhan Coronavirus Thread

The PRC has 1.3 billion people +/- and 56 million is only ~4% of the population. That said I can only imagine what would happen in the USA if sixh a percentage of the population was facing a similar quarantine. In fact i am not sure such actions would even be legal in the US. States and cities used ...

Re: Lights, cargo and sound systems, oh my! Or: Advice from the Hive Mind?

You may want to reconsider consider the trailer hitch mounted cargo carrier. It is removable when not in use. The weight of the hitch of course is not removable but the carrier could be used for the wheel chairs you mentioned. Since it is behind the vehicle in the rear turbulence there should be lit...

One thing that's pretty discouraging to me is the lack of progress on the cured/recovered count. Guessing that means recovery is slooooow
Just curious ... once you get it and recover I would assume you are immune?

Re: Chinese Mystery Illness Prompts Hospital Lockdown

More worrisome is they think that only 5.1% of the number of cases have been reported. Not because of cover up but difficulty in detecting infection until the person becomes symptomatic. (15 days incubation from other sources) IMO that is a sensible statement. The PRC would not be going to this ext...

Hmm interesting about the surgical mask and here is my logic. Take it or leave it. It seems DR. Leo's comments are more concerned about the improper fit of an N-95 mask. That and they are really not necessary unless you are health care provider. The main point of infection for influenza at least has...

What are the preps that ppl can do right now. I'm looking at masks & gloves. In addition to the ones I already have. 17 confirmed deaths of 551 confirmed cases. Still very early to make any sort of judgement about mortality (cases very likely underreported), but that slides up to about 3% I agreed on all points. Typically Influenza has a mortality rate of .1% to .2%. The Spanish flu (1918/1919 pandemic) had about...

The good news is that so far the mortality rate for the coronavirus does not seem high.
The bad news is that regular influenza frequently kills 80,000 people a year in the US or about 2x auto fatalities.
This year there is potentially a double whammy from influenza and the coronavirus.

Neat little graphic about why some diseases are considered droplet-spread and others (like Ebola) aren't, even tho you still shouldn't let the sick people sneeze right on you. Distance protects you well from Ebola. Measles, (and flu!) not so much, unfortunately. http://media.npr.org/assets/img/2014...
